They showered together in Sunshine’s room and it took far longer than it should have because Sunshine insisted on paying her debts to him from before Yule on her knees. The spark of lust they still had from the run and what happened afterwards was still alive and kicking. He returned the favour and helped her rack up a couple more debts, much to her delight.

“Itzal! I’m going to owe you forever now!”

She laughed as they were drying off and getting dressed. He was too blissed-out to worry about it. By now, they were both fully satiated and starving for actual food.

They ate cereal in the kitchen with the others, and the ghoulettes fussed over them both. The mood was good after their run and everyone was happy that Sunshine was getting back towards her old self. Itzal noticed she was giving free rein to her fiery side, more so than before, and he loved it. Whatever helped her deal with the shit that had been thrown at her since he arrived was fine with him.

His phone lit up and he checked it. He had to check in with Secondo and his ghouls before lunch, so he finished up, made his excuses and headed down to his study, leaving Sunshine and the others to their breakfast.

As usual, he was the last to arrive at Secondo’s study, and the others greeted him with sly smiles and grins. He felt his cheeks heating as he realised that the other ghouls could smell Sunshine on him so they would know exactly how he’d spent his morning. Secondo cleared his throat, clearly also now aware because, in his flustered state, Itzal had left his thoughts unguarded.

He sat quietly at the back, hoping that the ground would swallow him up soon, and the others laughed.

Secondo made sure each ghoul was okay and asked for updates on the various tasks they’d been set. Itzal hadn’t been given any tasks as of yet. He still had training to do with the others, and then he’d been granted some time off to care for Sunshine.

When they'd discussed the business, Secondo swung his eyes to Itzal.

“We have gathered all the information we need from the witch. We’ll sentence her today. I thought you would like to do the honours? Seeing as you are the one who suffered at her hands.”

Itzal felt the others’ attention on him again. He had thought about what would happen when this moment came. He knew what the sentence would be, and he'd known they would offer it to him to carry out.

“I was thinking I would ask Sunshine if she wants to be the one to do it. The witch hurt her also, and she already took out the blonde witch. I thought she might want the set.”

The others nodded their approval and grinned at that. Fire caught his eye and he saw banked orange flames in his stare. They liked the idea that Sunshine could end the witch. She deserved to carry out the sentence just as much as he did. And he suspected she would want to do it for him, because she’d often told him she would rip their throats out if she ever got the chance.

Secondo nodded.

“See what she thinks? And if she doesn’t want to?”

“Then of course I will gladly do it,” he said with a feral smile.

“She’s a feisty one, is that,” said Quinn. “The witch, I mean. Well, Sunshine too, but in a different way.”

Everyone looked at him, puzzled.

“What? She’s tough for a human. And wily,” he said as he shrugged.

Itzal didn’t want to think about the kinds of persuasion techniques Quinn had used on her. He came across as quiet and he was likeable in his own way, but he was old and the older ghouls often had a unique view of the world. He could tell that Quinn had lived through a lot of life, and times had changed completely since his formative years. Itzal guessed he was a fair few centuries old, not quite as old as Shay, maybe, but not far off either. He understood why Secondo had chosen him to be one of his ghouls, though.
