Itzal woke with a start, his lips peeled back from his fangs in a snarl. He'd been dreaming, but it was not his own dream.
Sunshine lay on the bed next to him and she was twitching around, making little mewling sounds and a tear was rolling down her cheek. This was new. They had woken each other up with bad dreams before, but it was always the emotions that had bled through the bond. This time, he had actually seen flashes of the images replaying in her mind and it filled him with rage.
She was dreaming of her time as Santos’ captive.
He shook her awake and she gasped, grabbing hold of his arm and gripping him so tight that her claws left behind red welts in his skin. Her eyes were wide with panic.
“It’s okay Sunshine, you’re here with me,” he whispered as he brushed the hair from her forehead and kissed it.
It took her a minute, but she realised where she was, and she growled a frustrated growl.
“I’m so sorry, Itzal, I didn’t mean to wake you. I was just having a bad dream,” she whispered back.
He stroked her cheek and she smiled sadly at him.
“Don’t be sorry. Do you want to tell me about it?”
She shook her head and snuggled into him.
It took everything he had to stamp down the rage that had clawed its way up at what he saw. He decided he wouldn’t tell her he'd seen actual images from the dream through their bond. He didn’t want to upset her because he knew she would blame herself; she would be thinking of him as she always did and beating herself up about it.
Itzal looked at the time and it was still the middle of the night. He was restless now though, so he waited for her to go back to sleep and he carefully got out of bed. He quickly got dressed and left the room.
Itzal wandered to Secondo’s ghouls’ lair in the hope someone would be awake. As he entered, he heard the TV coming from the lounge and headed along there. Air and Quinn were watching a nature documentary, and they turned when they sensed him there. He knew that Secondo’s team were the ones who were assigned to help him interrogate Santos.
“Hey Itzal” Air said. “What’s up? How’s Sunshine doing?”
“She had a bad dream. She's gone back to sleep now, but she was dreaming about him,” Itzal answered.
Air growled.
“I’m sorry, Itzal. That’s fucked up.”
“I want to see him. I need to know that he’s suffering. I know Secondo doesn’t want me near him for now. I get it. But I won’t go near him. I just need to see with my own eyes that he is hurting.”
“Oh, he’s hurting alright. I saw to it myself earlier today,” Quinn said with a toothy grin. He slid his eyes over to Air.
“What do you think?” the air ghoul asked him.
Quinn sighed.
“This is not a good idea.” He looked at Itzal. “No offence, but I can feel how angry you are.”
“I’ve been angry since he took her. That’s nothing new. I won’t go near the cell. I just need to see him.”
“We should check with Secondo. He will be pissed if he finds out we went behind his back.”
“Secondo will say no though, won’t he? What’s the worst that can happen?” Air said. “I say we let him take a peek. He knows he can’t have at him yet. And there will be, like, four of us to stop him if he loses it. Which he won’t, will you?” he said, pointedly glaring at Itzal.
