That night was unlike any other I've experienced with Mando by my side. It's usually quiet... peaceful. But not tonight.
We went to bed like normal. We had our back-to-back supper with each other and, once we put out the fire, headed into the tent to get some good rest. We both fell asleep quite quickly, and I especially fell really hard. I must've fallen asleep ten seconds after I closed my eyes.
But it didn't stay like that for long. My eyes opened to complete darkness. Tonight was especially dark, and it made it almost impossible to see anything. Usually there's just enough light here at night to see the outline of objects, but it's pitch black tonight.
There's a strange murmuring sound I hear. It's quiet. It sounds like it coming from inside the tent.
I blink my eyes a few times to make sure I'm awake. It could just be a dream, but I think I am actually awake. I roll over to face the side of the tent where Mando usually is. I can't see anything other than his silhouette, but I can tell the sound is coming from over there.
It sounds like he's talking to himself, but really quietly. I've never heard anything from him like this before. He must be just talking in his sleep.
I just lay there and listen to him. Most of it is just mumbles and random noises, but occasionally I'll hear a real word.
"stay"
It sounds like he's without the helmet. I thought he slept with the helmet on every night. I guess it must be uncomfortable to sleep with a bunch of metal on every single night, though.
"tight"
I roll over back onto my back and face the sky. Or really, the top of the tent. Outside I can hear some toads chirping. A faint breeze makes the leaves rustle gently. The water swishes calmly.
And then there's the mumbling Mando.
"mine"
If I could record everything I'm hearing right now, I would. It's very peaceful. Even though he's mumbling, it makes me feel safe knowing he's still right next to me. It's a nice sound.
I close my eyes and try to drift back into sleep. It's obviously the middle of the night, so I'd like to get some more rest. The sand beneath me is soft and cradles my body comfortably. It's a little chilly tonight, but it feels nice.
"Koda"
My eyes fly open. I turn to face him again. This one was louder than the other words. It sounded like he was angry. His body moves slightly like he's dreaming about something intense.
"Koda"
Okay, what the fuck? I can see his silhouette roll over toward me to face the sky. There is no reflection of the helmet where his head would be- just a dark outline of a head. I shouldn't be looking at his face.
Is he dreaming about me?
But I want to know what he looks like. I'm so curious to know his face, his smile, his eyes. What kind of hair does he have? Facial hair? Pretty eyelashes? Freckles? I'll never know.
"fuck"
My eyes leave where his head would be and travel down, knowing if I caught a glimpse of his face I would ruin his... tradition? His belief? His religion? I'm not sure what you'd call it.
I follow the outline of his body from his face and follow it down his chest, down his stomach, to his hips. My eyes stop when they fall upon some kind of bulge in his silhouette near the hips.
"no"
My eyes must be tricking me. I rub my eyes and return them to the same spot. It's definitely still there. I'm not sure what this means, but I can't take my eyes off of it. What is he dreaming about?
