Miguel got two sodas from the vending machine, one for him and one for Maya before he started walking back to Maya's room. He stopped when he saw his mom talking quickly to the doctors, of course, she was always stressed these days but she seemed to be extremely worried. He walked up to his mom as she put her face in her hands, a loud sigh emitting from her."I'm sorry, but I cannot legally give medication to a patient that refuses it." Miguel quickly looked at his mom, surely they weren't talking about Maya. Maybe it was Ya-Ya, she took pills to prevent her from having a stroke but at times she didn't want to take them.
"She's a minor, I'm giving you consent to force her to take them!" Miguel heard his mother's voice wobble as it slowly rose.
"I'm sorry, but in the state of California a teen can refuse medical treatment and the guardian doesn't get a say." Carmen's head quickly snapped up, she looked as if she remembered something revolutionary.
"What about Determination Of Capacity?" The nurse sighed, clicking buttons on her computer.
"I've told Maya what will happen to her if she doesn't take the medication, and she understands, I think she has the capacity to make her own decisions." Carmen shook her head.
"Determination Of Capacity also includes mental illness, if I bring her therapist in here, she'd testify that Maya isn't in the right capacity to make these decisions." The nurse sighed again as if she'd rather do anything else than argue with Carmen.
"If you can bring her in, and she can convince Maya's doctor, then we would be able to force Maya to take her medication." Miguel quickly walked to Maya's room, placing her soda on her table.
"Maya." Maya rubbed her eyes, slowly sitting up.
"Hmm?"
"Why aren't you taking your meds?" She sighed, all she wanted to do was sleep, but since Eli had left and her body just wouldn't allow her to.
"They aren't doing anything."
"They keep you from being in pain, and slow down the growth of your tumor! You need to take them!" Maya shook her head.
"I'm done."
"What?"
"I'm done fighting, Miguel, no matter how much I try or wait to get a lung it'll never happen. Why am I fighting something that will inevitably happen in the end?" Miguel couldn't come up with a good answer.
He needed her, Hawk needed her, mom, Johnny, Robby, and Kenny. They all needed her, but that wasn't the answer she wanted. She was tired of living for other people, she wanted to live for herself, and not simply live but thrive.
"Did you tell Hawk? I'm sure he'd agree with me." That was all Miguel could come up with, and luckily it looked like it made Maya think. When Maya didn't answer him, he cocked an eyebrow. "So you didn't tell him you were on a mission to kill yourself as soon as possible?" Miguel was frustrated, Maya still wasn't answering him and neither he nor Hawk seemed to be able to get it through her head to have some hope to live. "You don't think he'd like to know something like that?"
"Of course, he would, but why would I tell him something like that knowing it would upset him?!" Maya shouted suddenly, immediately regretting it as her head started to pound.
"But your okay telling the doctors so they can tell mom and upset her?" Miguel asked, flailing his arms around.
"No, but-"
"I get this is hard Maya, and it hurts and you just want it to be over with, but you have to fight Maya! We all need you!" Maya felt her throat clog up with tears.
"No, you don't get it, Miguel! Everything hurts, I can barely walk, and I already wanted to die before now. Everyone knows I'm going to die, but they hope I won't, but me? I would rather die than live at this point!" Miguel felt tears prick in his eyes, Maya really cared this little about her life? He almost wished they had never moved, that they stayed in Detroit where nothing bad happened to Maya.
"You're just upset right now, you don't really wanna die, Maya." Maya shook her head before looking up at Miguel.
"I do, Miguel, honest to God I do." Miguel was about to speak when there was a knock at the door. Miguel turned around, seeing the door slowly open, revealing Tory and Kenny.
"Maya." Kenny sighed happily, running over to her bedside. Miguel stared into Tory's eyes until she adverted her eyes to the floor. She folded her arms, continuing to stare at the ground. She blamed herself for Maya being in the hospital, her mind couldn't stop from wondering if she hadn't kicked Maya, would she be in the hospital today?
"I'm sorry," Kenny started, breaking down into a sob as Maya caressed his cheek. "I don't wanna be a bully, Maya, I apologized to Anthony a-and everything!" Maya looked at him sympathetically as he cried, Maya could see the bracelet she'd made him clinging to his wrist.
"You're not a bully, Kenny, Cobra Kai just got to your head. It happens to the best of us." Kenny looked up at Maya with watery eyes.
"I joined Eagle Fang, Anthony said that's the dojo that trained you. Right? Johnny Lawrence is your Sensei?" Maya nodded.
"That's right." Maya gave him a small smile.
"I wanna be like you, fight when I have to not because I wanna show off or be a bully." Maya nodded slowly.
"Maya..." Maya looked up, as did Kenny. Maya hadn't spoken to Tory, because Tory hadn't come to visit her and Maya wasn't interested in her phone lately.
"Hi, Tory." Maya smiled, she never blamed Tory for what happened, in fact, Maya knew it was her fault. She put herself in a situation to get hurt, so why should anyone else blame themselves?
"Maya, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to hurt you." Tory gulped, wiping a small tear that trickled down her cheek.
"It's not your fault, Tory, I put myself in that situation, you just fought like you normally would." Tory's shoulders shook as she cried, shaking her head.
"You wouldn't be in the hospital if it wasn't for me." Maya chuckled, pausing to cough.
"Yes I would, the medicine wasn't working, I would've ended up here eventually."
