I woke up to the feeling of a sudden sharp headache. Sweat covered my entirety even though I felt cold under the covers of the blanket.
"Morning sleepy head," A soft voice said beside me as I struggled to looked at them. From the blurry image before me I could just about make out Kaneki sitting beside me.
As I tried to sit up Kaneki pushed me straight back down. "Don't do anything right now Emilce, just try to relax, you have a high fever,"
I ignored Kaneki and forced myself to sit up and look at Kaneki properly. "What happened last night?" I groaned. I tried to rake through my memory about what could have possibly happened last night but my mind came up completely blank. I looked to Kaneki for answers as he quickly paled. Just as Kaneki was about to speak the door burst open and Touka came in and stood in the doorway.
"You finally woke up lazy ass,"
I looked at Touka in confusion. I thought she didn't want me here anymore.
As if reading my mind Touka said "Whatever I said yesterday... I didn't actually mean it alright." A light blush dusted her cheeks in embarrassment.
I smiled at Touka and then quickly asked the same question again. "What happened last night?" Kaneki turned pale yet again and then gave Touka a quick glance. "Last night well....," Kaneki began but was quickly interupted by Touka. "After you ran away I began to get worried, so I decided to call Kaneki to help me find you. We found you asleep in an alleyway so we brought you back here,"
I looked at Kaneki and Touka, and noticed that they were unable to look me in the eye. They were definitely hiding something but I decided not to question them as I was quickly distracted by my pounding headache. Touka then glared at Kaneki who then rushed out of the room and returned with a wet towel to place on my head. I gave Kaneki a soft smile filled with gratitude and he returned the gesture.
"You two better leave and let the girl rest," Yoshimura said as he appeared in the doorway.
Kaneki stood up and then gave me a small smile before leaving the room. Touka quickly followed behind him but was held back by Yoshimura."I need to speak to you for just a moment," he said to her and then the two walked away closing the door after them.
I sighed removing the wet towel from my face, then sat up at the edge of my bed. My necklace, now with a broken chain, layed on my bedside locker. I picked it up and sighed as I rubbed my thumb against the pendant. Unlike before, the necklace was no longer a bright purple it was now a deep shade of purple, so dark that it almost looked black. "I must have broken it or something," I mumbled to myself as I placed it back down.
A high pitched ringing then began to sound in my ear and suddenly I felt as though my left eye was on fire. I hissed from the pain and quickly ran out of my room to the bathroom. I looked into the mirror to see what was causing my eye so much pain but instead of seeing my usual hazel eyes I saw a pair of bright purple eyes stare back at me. My left eye was like a ghoul's eye but instead of it being red it was purple.
I screamed at me reflection and fell onto the floor. What the hell was happening to me. I could feel my whole body shaking from the shock. The bathroom door was suddenly flung open as Touka came rushing in.
"Hey, whats wrong, I heard you screaming?!" She asked kneeling down beside me. She wiped away a tear that was falling from my eye. "I'm a monster," I mumbled. "What are you talking about?" She asked. I didn't reply as she helped me stand up. My gaze instantly went to the mirror but now my eyes looked like normal. Maybe I was just imagining the whole thing?
My stomach then groaned loudly as Touka laughed. "Let's go get you something to eat."
Touka sat me down at a table and placed a sandwich infront of me as I hungrily stuffed it in my mouth. I noticed Touka narrowing her eyes at me but I decided to ignore it. "Does it.... taste nice..?" Touka whispered to me. I looked at her and gave her a hlf smile. "To be honest it tastes like cardboard but it's edible." Touka nodded at me and then handed me a slice of cake. "What about this?" I slowly took a spoonful of the cake and put it into my mouth but then immediately spat it out. "Jesus that tasted like shit,"I said as Touka nodded her head in response. "Stay here Emilce I'll be back in a few minutes," she said then quickly left me alone.
I sighed and then played around with the cake with my spoon. The cake was lemon cheesecake, one that used to be my favourite back in a time that felt like years ago. I took a deep breath and then tried to eat a bit more but I was unable to swallow it, the cake was too dry, too bland, too rough, too disgusting, too much of everything, that my body wanted to reject it. I forced my self to swallow what I had in my mouth and then threw the cake at the wall.
I felt tear build up in my eyes but I didn't know why. I didn't bother wipping them and just let them roll down my face gently. My left eye began to feel warm but unlike earlier it didn't hurt.
"Are you okay Emilce?" Someone said from behind me.
I turned around and faced Kaneki who smiled at me before his eyes went wide.
"What's wrong?" I asked him with concern written all over my face.
"Your eyes they....,"
