I balanced a tray on my thigh and knocked softly on the door.
"Hinami can I come in?" I asked.
I didn't get a response so I slowly opened the door and walked in. Hinami was laying on the sofa covering herself with a blanket. She was so still it was if she was pretending that if she didn't move then she was not there.
I placed the tray of food onto the small table and sat down beside her. Carefully I pulled down the blanket to see her face.
"Hinami I've got you some food and some seeds for that bird of yours," I said smiling softly at her. Hetare tweeted loudly from his cage.
Without saying a word Hinami got up to give the seeds to Hetare and gave me a smile to say thanks. She then sat back down beside me.
"Since the little guy's feed I think we need to feed the mama bird now too," I said giving Hinami a gentle poke.
She nodded her head in response and stared at the food infront of her.
"I'll leave you eat in peace then,"
I gave Hinami a soft pat on the head and then walked to the door. Before I left I turned back to look at her.
"I'll go get you a cup of coffee okay, and maybe send Kaneki over to hang out with you." I smiled at the girl. Hinami beamed at me, then I left the room and went downstairs to the café.
"How is Hinami doing?" Kaneki asked once he saw me coming in. He was cleaning down tables after all our customers had left.
"She's doing better though that bird of hers is so loud it's getting on my nerves."
Kaneki laughed. "Alteast she's happier now," He said.
I smiled at him while pouring out some coffee.
"Can you bring this up to Hinami for me. She much prefers your company over mine," I laughed.
Kaneki took the coffee from me then went up to Hinami's room leaving me alone in the café.
A sudden loud bang attracted my attention as I rushed upstairs to see what was causing all the commotion.
"Touka! Are you alright?!" I said while rushing to her side. Kaneki was sitting down beside me.
"Yoshimura she need medical attention right now!" I said as I noticed him in the doorway.
"No," he replied plainly. Both me and kaneki looked at him in shock.
"What do you mean 'no' this is Touka we're talking about, not some random girl off the street!"
"I said no. If shes taken her own measures against the doves then she should be willing to receive the consequences for her actions. Rather she lives or dies is none of our concern," he stated.
I stared at him in disbelief. "Do you really not care if Touka dies! Are you really so cold hearted that you're okay with someone dying after making such a small mistake. She's not in her right sense of mind at the moment, someone who was close to her was just killed by those doves. An innocent woman was murdered," I shouted.
Touka pushed passed us and rushed out of there while I ran after her, making sure to get the first aid kit on my way out.
"Touka you're honestly such an idiot. Why the hell would you go after those doves alone. I get that you want revenge and everything but atleast bring someone with you," I scolded her.
I tried to approach her but she pushed me away. "Leave me alone Emi," she hissed.
"You know, this isn't what Ryouko would have wanted, for you to be getting yourself killed over something as petty as revenge,"
"Who are you to tell me what Ryouko would have wanted! You barely knew her!" Touka screamed at me.
Touka's words hit me like an arrow to the heart.
"I know her more than you think!" I retorted. "Do you think that it's only you and Hinami that are hurting over Ryouko's death! All of us are mourning her death. How do you think I feel?! I was the one that was there when she died! She was right infront of me, barely six feet away, but I was too weak to save her from those bastards. She would be alive if I was only a bit stronger. I could have saved her!" I cried with tears streaming down my face.
Touka just stared at me in silence after my outburst. She didn't stop me this time when I came closer to her and treated her arm.
Once I was done I turned to leave but Touka grabbed my hand.
"None of us blame you for not being able to save her. If it were any of us in that situation I doubt that we would have been able to save her. There was just too many doves" she said. Touka the reached into her pocket and pulled put a mask. "Uta wanted me to give this too you, he finally finished it."
I took the mask from her hand and just stared at it. I gasped "It's almost like that sugar skull mask I wore-" "When you fought against those investigators," Touka finished for me. "Let's just say that it gave Uta some inspiration."
I looked at the mask in awe as my fingers traced over the elaborate design. The mask covered almost my full face it was just the area around where my left eye would be was cut out. The mask was also in all black with designs in purple and gold decorating it. "It's beautiful," I whispered.
"You are one of us now," Touka said as she gave me a soft pat on the shoulder.
"Thank you," I muttered as Touka walked away.
"Don't thank me. I had nothing to do with the creation of that mask. It was all Uta," she declared.
I smiled at her as her figure dissapeared into the distance.
