Goliath creature floating through the sea
A sight to behold, dwarfing all others
The largest creature in existence
Its own body makes a habitat
Barnacles and oysters pinch its blubber
Scars and markings of a long life lived
A ribbed gash spanning its back
An encounter with a propellor long past
Even faced with things it cannot hope to understand
It lives on, perseveres because it must
Clueless fish filter through its baleen
This giant will one day fall
Drift down to the depths of the deep bottom
Colossus making way for the microscopic
No bit will go to waste
It will feed generations
But now it floats, unworried
No other creature can bring it harm
Only the passage of time will bring about its end
Its birth finds its place decades in the past
Its very existence relic of a time far gone
Scratches on its body decades old
Sunlight filters through the surface above
The sea surrounding is bright and blue
It will make a tedious journey soon
Not for the first time, not for the last
A new generation will be created
Small, for their kind, but towering to others
And home for many
Fish stick to its side
Others school beside its enormous weight
The space it demands creates safety for them
No creature wants to anger this old bull
This mammoth provoked is a harrowing sight
