• 💚TWO YEARS LATER💚•

*💚Julia's POV💚*

"Here's your order," I said to another customer, handing over their food.

The last two years had been tough juggling three part-time jobs a day, grinding through exhaustion just to keep the dream alive. But it had all paid off. Now, I had my own food truck.

I'd been traveling all around Coolsville, never staying in one spot for too long. Each week brought a new location, new faces, and a familiar, hollow ache in my chest. I missed the gang. I missed him.

"Miss Willows?"

I glanced up from the drink I was making. A man in a crisp suit stood before me, smiling a little too brightly.

"How may I help you, sir?" I asked, sliding on my sweetest customer-service smile.

"I've been sent by my employer, Mr. Emile Mondavarious, to invite you to his world-famous amusement park, Spooky Island." He handed me a thick, creamy envelope. The gesture felt surreal, like something out of a forgotten mystery.

"What's the catch? People don't just get invited to an amusement park for no reason. Especially not by the owner."

"Mr. Mondavarious would like you to solve a mystery."

A mystery.

My heart gave a painful, hopeful thud. Then reality set in. Why me? The others were far more capable. It wouldn't be the same without them.

"What's in it for me?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.

"A fee of ten thousand dollars. Room and board. Free airfare. And an all-you-can-eat pass," he recited, ticking each off his fingers.

"I'll think about it," I said with a tight smile.

My heart and mind warred for days. The thrill of a new mystery called to me, but the silence that followed felt deafening. Solving one alone... it just wouldn't be right.

The airport hummed with the chaos of departure. I stood near the gate for the Spooky Island charter, nervously smoothing down the emerald, green dress I'd chosen a far cry from my usual practical leggings and tees. I'd even done my hair, applied a little makeup. Who am I trying to impress? I wondered, just as my eyes landed on them.

Two familiar faces in the crowd. My breath hitched.

It had been two years. Two years of wondering of missing. And now, here they were.

"...but more importantly, I'm on a journey of self-discovery," Velma's voice carried over the noise, confident and bright.

"NASA, huh?" Fred replied, sounding impressed.

I gathered my courage and stepped closer. "Hey, guys."

Their heads snapped toward me. For a moment, they just stared. Fred's mouth actually went slack. Velma's eyes widened behind her glasses.

"Oh, my," Velma breathed, a genuine smile spreading across her face. "Julia. You look... amazing."

"Wow," Fred managed, still looking slightly dazed. He blinked, as if making sure I was real.

"Does it look bad?" I asked suddenly, self-conscious.

"No! No, it's not that," Fred said quickly, finding his voice. "You look great. Really."

—Charter Service to Spooky Island will begin boarding momentarily. —

The announcement crackled overhead, breaking the spell.

"You guys look amazing, too," I said, meaning it. I'd followed Fred's rise—his book had been a surprise, but reading it filled me with a quiet pride. And Velma... NASA. Of course. She was always meant for the stars.

Before we could sink into the awkwardness of years apart, a sharp, familiar voice cut through the terminal.

"What do you mean I can't have seven carry-on bags? That's so economy!"

Daphne.

"Crap," Velma muttered under her breath.

Daphne's head whipped toward us. Her expression hardened, the warmth draining from her face. "Oh, no. I'm not talking to you guys!" She turned her back, presenting us with a very expensive-looking suitcase and a wall of hostility.

Typical Daphne. Some things never changed.

She spun back around, marching over with purpose. "What are you doing here?" she demanded, eyes narrowed.

"Isn't it obvious?" Velma replied coolly, adjusting her glasses. "We all received the same letter from one Emile Mondavarious, the reclusive owner of Spooky Island."

"Unfair!" Daphne's voice was laced with genuine outrage. "I was going to solve this mystery all by myself for the first time ever!"

Fred couldn't resist. A slow smirk spread across his face. "How are you going to save yourself when you get caught?"

"I'm a black belt now," she shot back, drawing herself up. "I've transformed my body into a dangerous weapon."

A beat of silence passed. Then, almost in unison, Fred, Velma, and I let out a burst of laughter—not mocking, but the kind born from years of shared history and inside jokes. It was an instinctive, unfiltered sound I hadn't realized I'd missed so much.

"It's true!" Daphne insisted, her cheeks flushing.

I wiped a tear from the corner of my eye, the laughter dissolving the last of my nerves. My smile softened into something real and warm as I looked at her.

"I believe you," I said gently.

And for the first time in two years, standing in that noisy airport surrounded by ghosts of my past, I felt a piece of myself slot back into place. The mystery was already beginning—and maybe, just maybe, I wouldn't have to solve it alone.
