*💚Julia's POV💚*

The dust from the explosion still hung in the air, a gritty haze in the lab's sterile light. Fred's accusatory glare burned into me, but before I could fire back a retort about not being a nanny, Velma's sharp voice cut through the tension.

"Hey, gang." She wasn't looking at us. Her gaze was fixed on the wall the blast had partially demolished. Through the jagged hole, ancient, weathered lettering was revealed, carved deep into the stone.

"Beware who enters the Monster Hive. Inside your fears will come alive," she read aloud, her voice flat.

A cold dread, different from the immediate panic of monsters, settled in my stomach. What lay on the other side of that warning?

Without another word, Fred led the way, ducking through the hole. We followed, emerging into a chamber so vast it stole my breath. Dominating the centre was a colossal, intricate machine of brass, glass, and pulsating tubes. It looked like a Satanic organ crossed with a power plant.

"Oh, my," Daphne breathed.

"Look!" Fred pointed. Mounted on frames around the machine-like grotesque trophies were the stolen costumes. The Zombie. The Miner 49er. Captain Cutler's diving suit.

"I bet they're all here," Fred said grimly.

"He must have used the costumes to make real monsters," Velma deduced, her mind racing ahead. "Which implies..."

"He needs the costumes to make the monsters," Fred continued the thought.

"Which implies he already had a Pterodactyl Ghost costume somehow," Daphne added.

The logical conclusion hung in the air, heavy and sickening. Velma's face, usually a mask of intellectual curiosity, crumpled into something raw. "Patrick's the one."

"Aw! Velma's in love," Daphne said, completely misreading the devastation on her friend's face.

"No," Velma corrected, her voice brittle. "I mean the one. The bad guy. That's why he wanted to go out with me. To see what we knew."

Shaggy, ever tactless, blurted out, "We just saw Patrick at the bad guys' hangout. He was working both sides of Psycho Street."

I shot him a look that could curdle milk, but the damage was done. Velma's shoulders slumped.

"I don't know who's behind this," Fred said, steering us back to the immediate threat, "but we don't need him transforming more costumes. Let's find a way to shut down this monster-maker for good."

While Fred, Velma, and Daphne moved off to inspect a strange, pulsating light source, Shaggy puffed out his chest. "Scooby-Doo. We're the ones that found this place. Score one for the big guys! Now we need to keep acting like mondo-groovy detectives. Come on."
