*💚Julia's POV💚*

The limo ride back to headquarters had been a tomb on wheels. Shaggy sat curled against the window, Scooby a mournful lump at his feet. The usual post-mystery chatter—the excited debrief, the relieved jokes—was absent, swallowed by a heavy silence. When we pulled up, they simply slipped out into the night without a word. I hadn't seen them since.

Now, the morning after, the air in our living room was thick with the sour aftertaste of public failure. We were gathered around the TV like mourners at a wake. I'd perched myself on a barstool behind the couch, needing distance from the suffocating gloom. Daphne and Velma occupied opposite ends of the sofa, and Fred sat rigidly on a lone armchair in the centre, his eyes fixed on the screen.

The news anchor's voice was a sharp, polished knife.

"...the higher the pedestal, the harder the fall. And Mystery Inc. fell far in the embarrassing debacle that tarnished the reputation of the once-great gang. It was an utter disaster as two of the gang's key members, Norville 'Shaggy' Rogers and Scoobert 'Scooby' Doo, caused untold damage to Coolsville's hottest new tourist attraction—which took a full two years to complete. When asked for a comment, Fred Jones, leader of Mystery Inc., said this: 'Coolsville can solve its problems without us.'"

The clip cut abruptly. No mention of the real monster. No hint of the masked provocateur. Just the devastating image of Shaggy and Scooby, framed as clumsy buffoons.

"I didn't say that!" Fred burst out, springing to his feet. "I mean... I did, but that's completely out of context!" He'd given a full, detailed interview after the chaos, explaining everything. None of it had made the cut.

"This is Heather Jasper-Howe, disillusioned from Coolsville."

Velma stood up and jabbed the power button on the remote, plunging the room into a brittle silence. "It's my fault," she said, her voice small. "I'm the one who told Shaggy and Scooby to get the ropes." She sank back onto the couch, hugging a pillow.

"No, Velma, it's my fault," Daphne countered, twisting her hands in her lap. "I should have checked that they were tied before I let go."

Fred turned to face us, running a hand through his hair. "It's my fault, too. We all know how Shaggy and Scooby can be."

The weight of their collective self-blame settled in the room. Then, three pairs of eyes shifted to me, expecting my contribution to the chorus of guilt.

I took a slow breath, the frustration that had been simmering since last night finally boiling over. "I don't know what you expect me to say," I began, my voice low but clear. "I don't always feel like a girlfriend when all you guys ever ask me to do is babysit my boyfriend and his best friend."

The words hung in the air. They had the decency to look ashamed.

"So, they act like idiots the majority of the time," I continued, standing up. "But they're still part of the gang. They're our idiots. And even if they're idiots, you shouldn't be looking at their flaws when we're supposed to be a team. They are our friends." I looked at each of them. "If you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go look for them."

I didn't wait for a reply. I walked out of the living room, my footsteps echoing in the too-quiet house, my heart aching for the two boys who'd felt so invisible they'd disappeared.

*💚Shaggy's POV💚*

From our hiding spot behind the kitchen counter, I heard her footsteps fade away. Each one felt like a punch. Julia. She was always there, a fierce, green-eyed guardian angel for our stupidity. And what did we give her in return? More trouble. More reasons for the others to sigh and roll their eyes. How had she not gotten sick of us yet?

Up in the living room, Fred was trying to rally the troops. "Guys, we just need to stay strong, in control, and work fast. Come on, gang. Let's get to the lab. We'll figure a way out of this Jurassic jumble."

Their footsteps retreated toward the lab, leaving Scooby and me alone in the echoing kitchen. I slid down to sit on the cold tile floor, my back against the cabinets, staring blankly at the refrigerator door.

"Shaggy?" Scooby whimpered, resting his chin on my knee.

"We're screwups," I stated. It wasn't self-pity; it was just the flat, undeniable truth finally sinking in.

"Yeah," he agreed, his voice a soft rumble.

"I guess, looking back... every time they made a plan, we did screw it up somehow. I just never noticed before." The memories played like a bad movie: tangled ropes, misplaced traps, panicked runs that derailed everything. "And we dragged Julia down with us." That was the worst part. She'd stood up for us in there, her voice sharp with a loyalty we probably didn't deserve. I couldn't imagine the quiet frustration she must have been carrying because of us. Because of me.

"Me neither," Scooby sighed.

"There's gotta be some way we can prove that we actually belong in the gang," I muttered, the thought taking root. "We've gotta do something totally unlike us."

Scooby got his thinking face on, tongue poking out. I sat up straighter, a wild, desperate idea smacking me in the brain.

"You know, Scoob... we could act like real detectives!" I announced.

Scooby started laughing—a short, disbelieving ruff—until he saw my face. I was dead serious.

"Really?" he asked, his ears perking up.

I scrambled to my feet, energy surging through me for the first time since the museum. "Scooby, raise your right paw!"

He lifted his left.

"No, your right paw. Your other paw." He corrected himself, holding it up solemnly. "Now, repeat after me." I cleared my throat, putting my own right hand over my heart in a pledge. "From this day forward, we will no longer be our goofy selves."

Scooby's voice was earnest as he repeated, "From this day forward, we will no longer be our goofy selves."

"We will be awesome detectives. And we will be more like Fred, and Velma, and Daphne, and Julia." Saying her name gave me a fresh burst of determination. "We will be terrific, and fantastic, and spectacular... and cease to be loser-iffic, lame-tastic, and suck-tacular!"

Scooby puffed out his chest, his eyes shining with newfound purpose. "Suck-tacular!" he repeated, the word a vow.

It was a promise made on a kitchen floor, a pact between two best friends who were tired of being the punchline. We were going to change. For the gang. For Julia. For ourselves. Starting now.
