ELECTRIC DESIRE FOR ESCAPE
I looked around my cell. The clean, white walls seemed to mock me and my current state. Cuts and bruises lined my arms, making my arms a demented rainbow of colors. I knew for sure that my left eye was purple, and my right was struggling to stay open.
In other words, it wasn't a rough day compared to others. Today was gentle compared to the days before and certainly the days to come.
I could still feel the sting of the needles, and the shock of electrodes coursing through my body. That feeling was going to stay for a while. My fingers tingled in memory of the feeling.
I laid down on the stale bed that was provided for me. Even closing my eyes hurt.
A black-cladded figure drives a rusty red Jeep haphazardly, running through red lights and the green ones. The car jerks to a stop in front of Cadmus Labs.
The figure, that can now be identified as woman, runs toward the entrance of the building, but not before pulling up her hood lower to completely cover her face. She reaches the entrance and lowers a baby carriage on the front step. The figure opens the cover of the carriage and looks at the baby sleeping in peace. She places a note on the baby's torso and a light, ghostly, kiss on the baby's forehead.
The figure then rings the buzzer and rushes towards the Jeep and speedily drives away.
A scientist opens the door and looks down. Once recovering over the initial shock, the man picks up the baby carriage and opens it. The baby rests inside, her chest rising and falling with each breath. A note rests on the baby's chest.
"Her name is India."
I was five months old back then.
My dream then transitioned to another scene.
"Daddy, can I touch this?" A young me asked, poking a vial full of a green liquid.
"Uh..." my adoptive father muttered, looking through a microscope. He then looked my direction and his eyes widened. "No! India, no." He quickly pulled me to his side.
"Sorry." I muttered, rubbing my chubby hands together, as I was nervous. I waited for reprimandation.
None was recieved. My father crouched in front of me and pulled me into a hug.
"It's alright, India. But I just don't want something to happen to you. Promise me you won't touch anything unless told to."
I nodded into his lab jacket and whispered, "I promise."
I was six years old then.
My dream then moved along to another.
"Dr. Canning, something's happening to the..." A Cadmus employee trailed off when he saw me with my adoptive father.
"Uh...something's happening to the uh..experiment." The employee stuttered.
My father patted my shoulder and kissed my forehead. "I'll be right back, India. I love you."
He ran off with the employee to another room. My instincts felt as if I needed to follow him. I followed both of them to a lab, where the bright light made me squint my eyes.
Something was stationed on a lab table, wiggling around. It was clamped down with metal. I gasped silently as I saw what it was. A man-bat was screeching, struggling in his bonds.
"Mister, we want to help you." my father tried to soothe the mutant. Suddenly, the sound of metal breaking was heard throughout the room.
The man-bat was free. He screeched and grabbed my father by the collar. My father was strangely calm. "We just want to help you."
The mutant screeched and then brought up his claw. He slashed it across my father's throat. I remembered screaming as my father fell limp to the floor.
My dream transitioned once again.
"Miss Canning, this will hardly hurt if you just cooperate." Dr. Garlding seethed through clenched teeth.
I raggedly breathed, jerking around, trying to escape the metal clamps that kept me down. Dr. Garlding growled with a low voice and signaled another Cadmus employee to do the honors. The unknown employee plunged a needle full with blue liquid into my arm. My breathing hitched and slowed down.
"Miss Canning, I tried to warn you. The less you cooperate, the more you will have to suffer. Now, we injected a paralyzing serum into you that lasts 5 hours, just enough for our work to be complete. Do you understand?" He asked innocently.
The serum started to sink in and affect my body. But before the serum affected my mouth, I spit in Dr. Gardling's direction.
Then I was unable to move anything. Dr. Gardling grinned and moved towards a flip switch. He looked at me and made his smile larger, looking maniacal in the dim alb light. Then he flipped the switch.
Electricity flowed through my body, making my body cry out internally in agony. I wanted to scream out, but I couldn't. There was no escape.
I sat up covered in sweat, my hands tangled in my thin covers. Frost covered the walls and my bed. My powers had started to work while I was asleep. I raked a hand through my tangled hair and breathed slowly. My desire to leave had never been stronger.
