Wednesday put on a casual, more comfortable outfit, she looked for Thing but could not find him. She worried a little, thinking back to last semester but decided to give him the benefit of the doubt. He was fine, she felt it and she also felt nauseous about this date idea, and not in the good way.
She would rather think of it as a couple of friends casually 'hanging out'. Although, if Xavier felt the need to call it a date, she wouldn't stomp on his parade. Whatever made the golden retriever happy.
She sat on her bed. watching Enid throw her stuff across the room, attempting to perfect an outfit. She couldn't find the right bracelets, Wednesday thought it foolish but she also tried to Understand Enid, Wednesday has refused to wear any colors outside of white and black since the beginning of her existence.
"Oh my gosh! I found it!" Enid looked like a madwoman, holding the thin golden bracelet up, staring at it as if it were microscopic. "Fantastic. Can we go now?" Wednesday sighed.
"Yes! How do I look?" She posed but then realized who she was talking to when she looked at Wednesdays pained face, "You know what, don't answer that."
Wednesday let out a breath she didn't know she was holding and stood up, never in her life has she been impatient and excited to see and interact with another human being.
Enid grabbed Wednesday's hand and skipped them out of the room. Wednesday didn't pull back, when it came to Xavier and Enid, she didn't mind physical contact as much. They both mattered a lot to her. She never cared if people liked her or not but at some point, she found herself caring specifically about who did or did not.
She always found trust as a weakness, a desperate need of companionship to the point you are challenging your desire to live. She guessed she would risk it for them. Wednesday cared about a lot of the people at Nevermore, but she wouldn't admit it out loud even if her life depended on it.
The four walked up to each other and without realizing, Wednesday let out a sigh of relief when she looked into Xavier's eyes.
The absence of him is the presence of loneliness.
"Let's not waste time, let's go." Wednesday walked off as the gang followed.
There were no taxis in Nevermore but there were Ubers. Ajax said it would arrive shortly and Wednesday stood on the side of the pavement, waiting for the car.
"Wait, where are we even going?" She questioned and Enid was just as clueless.
"Xavier and I thought it all out, all you guys have to do is sit still and look pretty."
"Sounds sexist.""I'm more than okay with that!"
The boys laughed at the odd pair; Wednesday was Xaviers black cat while Enid was Ajax's golden retriever. The two have really proven the saying 'Opposites attract.'
A car pulled up and stopped and they piled in, and it was mostly them all making jokes while Wednesday sat there, uninterested in the topic. Perhaps she was too serious, but she ignored their debate and spent the drive glaring at the male driver who kept on giving them looks.
"We're here!" Xavier jumped out of the car and reached for Wednesdays' hand. She gave the man one last look and accepted her loves hand.
"The train station?" Wednesday looked at the building, curiously.
Enid screeched excitedly, "We're sneaking out of town?"
"How exciting."
Ajax and Xavier explained they had a few things planned for them but due to the patheticness of Jericho, they couldn't do anything exciting here.
Incredibly valid.
They got their own separate little room in the train which made is easier for the three to act like fools. Wednesday felt like a maternal feline, watching her young, living carelessly and foolishly. Not aware of danger or threats that could be lurking at every corner. Their oblivious lives depended on her.
After about twenty minutes, they arrived at another town, Kingsley.
"Let the fun begin," Xavier smiled at her and took her by the hand.
"What else?! Come on, we want to know!" Enid begged to know what else was planned, ice creaming running down her hand because she couldn't stop talking for a second. Wednesday kept her mouth shut and secretly enjoyed the mystery of it all. It felt adventurous, like she was free. She ate more of her coffee ice cream cone and Xavier chuckled, thinking it was the most adorable and out of character thing she has ever done, it was easy for people to forget that she is an actual human. She had more in common with a creature of artificial intelligence than an adolescent human her own age.
"So, we have two dates set up," Ajax started to explain. "Ice cream was a must. Next is my date idea for you, and then Xaviers date idea for Wednesday."
Wednesday glanced at Xavier who looked proud and excited. She realized they actually put a lot of thought into this, she found it quite endearing.
Enid gasped, quite literally inhaling some ice cream.
"Awhhhh, I cannot wait!"
Ajax looked at his phone, at the time. "You won't have to do much waiting, the first one starts in five minutes."
Wednesday started licking her ice crem even faster. Coffee ice cream and dark chocolate are her only exceptions in the unhealthy diabetes triggering dairy business. Xavier got a green pistachio, which looked interesting. While Enid got a strawberry with sprinkles, of course and Ajax got a cookie dough.
"You're going to get a brain freeze." Xavier said as a matter of fact. Wednesday glared up at him. "Mind over matter," She shrugged, glancing at the one in his hand. "What does that one taste like?"
"This? Try it." He put it up to her mouth and she wrapped her lips around it, keeping eye contact with Xavier, causing him to forget everything for a moment.
"I like it."
Xavier swallowed, 'mind over matter' he repeated in his head.
