It was fourth grade about a month into the school year when they announced that we were allowed to play an instrument that year. I was super excited and as soon as I got home started to browse through all the possible instruments I could play. I carefully debated reasons why I should or should not play each instrument until I flipped to the page with a flute on it. It was in that single moment in time that time stopped. The beauty and elegance of the long silver instrument took my breath away. I stared at the picture with wonder until my mom got home. She walked in and asked what I was looking at so I showed her. She said that I should do more research to make sure that this was the instrument I wanted to play. I already knew this was the one but I looked up YouTube videos anyway just to please her. I watched so many videos that day I thought my eyes would fall out and yet I could not get tired of the wonderfully beautiful sound that was emitted from the flute. If I had any doubts before they were definitely gone now. I immediately told my mom to make the order. She instead called my aunt. It turns out my aunt had had the most amazing instrument in the world right under my fingertips. I ran my fingers across it in awe. We put it away until my first lesson in 3 weeks.
The time couldn't have passed by any slower. Finally the day arrived and I skipped into school with excitement. I had to wait another 2 hours before I could play my flute but it was well worth the wait. I walked into the classroom that was actually more like an attic a little nervously but I was to far to turn back now. My teacher introduced herself as Mrs. Zywicki and she said that we were all going to try to play a D on our respective instruments. Everyone was supposed to try individually, but no one was able to do it. I brought my flute to my lips on my turn and blew across the mouthpiece. The sound that came out made me beam. It was the perfect note. As I brought the flute back down I was beaming. Not with pride but with pure bliss. I knew I wasn't a master flautist yet but the way I felt after playing just one note told me that I was never going to give up on playing this amazing instrument. It not only sounds wonderful but fills me with joy and gives me faith in what the world could be.
Now 3 years later I'm 1 of 2 people in my grade who play the flute and I can not love it more. After all these years it still makes me happy.
