Rachel Hemmings.
My name is Rachel, and I'm 18 with a twin brother named Luke. He and I are nothing alike: I'm shy, he's not; I'm quiet, he's outgoing; I'm alone, he's popular.
Our dad died in a car accident 10 years ago when a drunk driver ran a red light. From California, we moved to Australia with our mom, 3 months after his death. Luke always had friends in school, but I was more of the outcast. I still am a little.
In our senior year of high school, Luke always hangs with his little posse: his girlfriend Cassaundra, Calum and his girlfriend Britney, Ashton and his girlfriend Cheyenne, and Michael. They're usually in the far corner of the field. Everyone knows them as the 'Rejects'.
They have a reputation for ditching class, misbehaving, and not paying attention most of the time.
We all have first hour together, and it's unusual that they're quiet today. They all sit in the left front corner of the classroom, while I'm all the way in the back. They keep glancing at me every so often, and I assume they're talking about me.
"Rachel, come over here, please," Luke says, leaning sideways and looking straight at me. I ignore him, until he makes a big fuss out of it.
He stood up from his desk, and made his way toward me. He grabbed my arm, and pulled me over to where he and his friends were.
One of the girls immediately jumped up and embraced me in a hug. "Hi, my name is Britney!" She squeals happily. I wave and say a quiet 'hi' to them, and sit down next to Luke.
Our teacher told us we had a free day for the period, so everyone was running around as she just sat in her chair, reading a book.
They all introduced themselves to me, even though I already knew who they are. But I guess it's the right thing to do when you meet someone.
"So, when's your birthday?" Calum asked.
"You're a fucking idiot, Calum. We're twins for fuck's sake. We have the same birthday," Luke said laughing.
"Hey, you don't have to be so mean," Cassaundra said quietly.
"YEAH!" Calum shouted, defending himself but slightly laughing.
They've been talking for the whole class time, I only saying something when they directed it towards me.
Every now and then, I would look up to see Michael staring at me with his piercing green eyes. But as soon as I looked at him, he would turn away.
Then our teacher, Mrs. Statford, told everyone to quiet down and go back to their seats, as she had an announcement to make.
"We will be starting a project tomorrow in class. You may work alone, or with one other person. So if you want to find a partner, I suggest you do it now," she said.
While everyone ran around the room finding their partner, I sat quietly in my seat and decided I wanted to work alone.
That was until I felt a light tap on my shoulder. I turned around, looking up into those same green eyes.
"Hi, I'm Michael."
