Parvathi POV:
Parvathi lay in bed, endlessly gazing at the ring in her hand. A smile graced her lips, while her eyes reflected shyness.
"I felt so happy today because Abi gifted me a ring. . . he told me he wanted to marry me. In that moment, I was both shy and elated, unsure of how to respond. He is the best man after my father and brother. I still remember our first encounter a year ago when I visited Deepa. I met him there he lived in the upper portion of Deepa's rental house. Deepa is my bold and loving sister. She left home when our parents opposed her higher education. Uninterested in village norms, she yearned to be independent. Unlike me, she bravely questions anyone without fear. I admire her courage and wish to be like her, but when my parents resisted my education, I struggled to leave home like Deepa did. However, when she left, my parents cried all day. They aren't rude they just abide by village traditions. Even now, they ask me about her, knowing I talk to her every day and visit her monthly. I don't want to hurt them, which is why I gave up on my education.
During my visit to Deepa, I stayed for nearly ten days, but she was always at work. When I inquired about her job, she would sidestep the question. I grew bored staying indoors all the time, having come directly to Deepa's house from the railway station where she picked me up. She always insisted I not tell anyone I was her sister.
One day, feeling restless, I went upstairs to pass the time, but there were no stairs to the next level. Standing before the elevator, I hesitated, unsure how to open it or select a floor. I considered retreating since elevators weren't my thing, but then I heard a male voice.
"Come with me I'm going upstairs too," he said. He had a charming and silent beauty, but I politely declined his offer. My parents had always warned me about city men, saying they may look appealing but often have dark hearts.
"You can trust me. . . I won't do anything," he assured, and with that, he entered my thoughts. Conflicted, I weighed whether to go in. Just as the doors were about to close, I quickly stepped forward to stop them completely. I was eager to see something of this city, so I entered the elevator.
After that incident, he spoke to me kindly, and I enjoyed his company. . . day by day, our friendship blossomed into love. Deepa was unaware of this. . . with those old memories, I drifted into sleep.
Author's POV:
"Parvathi, get up. . . it's already 5," her mom tried to wake her.
Parvathi slowly opened her eyes and smiled at her mom, who was now tidying her room.
"Mom, why are you doing this? I'll take care of it," she said.
"Paru, you're going to Mumbai it's your father's request," her mom replied.
"Mumbai! " she exclaimed with joy, thrilled at the thought of seeing Abi.
"Yes, you need to talk to Deepa about her marriage. She always rejects it, but she can't stay single forever. It's time for her to get married, and you should ask her to come meet your father once and to let go of her stubbornness," her mom added.
"Okay, Mom, I'll talk to her, but what about the tickets? "
"They're all ready all you have to do is get ready," her mom said.
"Okay, Mom. " With that, she entered the restroom to prepare for her journey.
At Mumbai railway station:
Parvathi exited the train, feeling anxious since it was her first time visiting Deepa's house alone. Deepa's mobile had been unreachable for two weeks, but Parvathi knew how to get to her place as she was a quick learner.
