When I stepped into the new apartment in New York I was shocked at how modern it was, it was almost as cold as my place in LA. Sophie's flight got delayed, so it would just be me for tonight. I unpacked everything I brought in my suitcase while I waited for the rest of my things to be delivered. Although this place was new and barren, it was close to set. I set out all my clothes on the king size bed and went to the nearest grocery store to buy some cleaning supplies. My mom was a germaphobe and I knew she'd never let me hear the end of it if I didn't wipe everything in the apartment down first before putting my own belongings in.
I had been to the city many times so I was at least a little familiar with my surroundings. Once I finished cleaning and getting settled in, I looked out the window in my living room. It was big— the window and the city itself. I was so bored, I didn't know what to do. It was too early to go to bed and I didn't know anybody here yet. I also wasn't used to the time difference. In New York, it was three hours later than it was in California, and I wasn't tired since I was still running on LA time.
I ended up going to sleep at 2 am. Luckily I had nothing to do the next day, it was a Saturday and filming didn't start until Monday morning. When I woke up I checked my messages, actually it was my phone that woke me up due to all the notifications. I saw that I had a bunch of missed calls from Sophie, and I cursed myself as I began to call her back. She picked up on the first ring. "Hey sleepyhead, I've been trying to reach you all morning." She said.
I looked at the time. 11:24 am. "Shit, I'm sorry. I went to bed late and-"
"It doesn't matter, I'm at your door. Will you let me in?" I hung up and scurried to invite her inside. I was afraid she'd be mad at me, but she smiled when I swung the door open and she stepped into the entryway. "Sorry I just got here. My flight got delayed twice, can you believe that?"
"That sucks.."
"Yeah well...I'm here now." She looked around briefly and nodded her head in approval. "Looks like you got settled in alright." I nodded with her. "Do you need anything?" She asked.
"No, I went out yesterday and got almost everything I needed."
"Good, I'm gonna go check into my hotel and get some shut eye. I'll only be here until Tuesday morning, I wanted to be there for your first day on set."
I thanked her for getting the apartment and for checking in on me and we said goodbye. She had planned on sleeping in and responding to some emails for the rest of the day. As for me, I watched tv and snacked. I was so ready to begin filming at that point. I had grown so bored so fast and I was anxious to start something new.
*********
Monday eventually rolled around and after waking up at 8:30 am and getting my bag of essentials together, Sophie was waiting for me in a car out front. It took us ten minutes to arrive on set, I underestimated how close my apartment was. We drove up to the gate and showed them my stage pass and the man at the entrance granted us access. The gates opened and as soon as we found a parking space, Sophie showed me where my trailer was, then got caught up in a conversation with a colleague of hers who was coincidentally on set. I stood in front of the door, with my name on it, I realized how surreal it was all staring to feel. I looked around to all the other trailers, that's when I saw a familiar face walking by.
He looked surprised to see me again, his eyebrows shot up and he smiled. "Hey, you made it." He exclaimed.
I nodded. "I did!"
Pedro stopped in front of me. "I knew you'd get the part."
"Yeah I guess they saw something in me." I shrugged.
His eyes lingered on mine for a second, I was waiting for him to say something. He looked at my name that was written on a laminated paper stuck to the door of my trailer. "Have you been inside yet?"
"Not yet, I've never had one of these before. I'm kind of basking in the moment right now." I said, earning a chuckled from him. "Where's yours?"
He pointed to the trailer straight ahead, it was three trailers down from mine. "That one over there." He answered. I couldn't help but look at his arms. Pedro was wearing a plain black T shirt and the sleeves hugged his biceps just right, it wasn't my fault his arms were just out for everyone to see, so of course I looked at them. His jeans and white shoes made the outfit. It was sort of a habit for me to observe everyone's fashion sense, what with being a model and all.
I looked over at it, and the wind blew and the scent of his cologne wafted my way. It smelled expensive, I feel like I've smelled it before but I could be wrong. Sophie had made her way over after finally breaking away from her conversation. "Sorry for leaving you hanging, that woman can talk forever." She said as she rested her hand in my shoulder. She glanced at Pedro, and offered her hand. "I don't believe we've formally met, but I've seen your work. I'm Sophie, Magnolias manager." He shook her hand introduced himself back. He said he had to run, and we each bid our goodbyes. "He's handsome, don't you think?" She said nudging my arm.
I awkwardly smiled. "Stop it."
I set my things down in my trailer and waited until it was time to film my first scene. I had my script in hand, reading over my lines so that I knew them like the back of my hand. The hair and makeup artists arrived and began doing their work on me. I've had my hair and makeup done many times, so I was used to this. I learned that it was good to develop a friendship with the people who handle your appearance, so I engaged in conversation with them. They were nice, not too much younger than I was, but they were talented.
The wardrobe lady stopped by and set out the clothes she wanted me to wear for this scene, so after my hair and makeup was finished I changed into that.
Walking over to the set I could feel my nerves in my stomach, I hoped I wouldn't make too many mistakes.
