About a month later things started to turn. Indians were beginning to make their summer raids and attack the ranchers. It was on a cool moonlit night that Jonny was sitting on the porch watching the stars. He looked toward the willows down by the creek. Then it dawned on him. Something was slowly moving. It was... It was someone on a horse. An Indian! "Indians!!" he shouted. Clarence, Charles, and Brad came running with guns. "You see Indians?" "Yes they were moving up beside the willows." "Probably trying to make a surprise attack." Brad said. "I can see them now." said Clarence. "I'll get everyone into the house." said Jonny. The Benson house was made of bricks and rocks from the creek and the roof was dirt. Their house was so strong, no fire could burn it down. Jonny ran as fast as he could. He wrenched the bunkhouse door open and yelled, "Indians!, come to the house for safety!" Alisha ran to him. "Where are they?" she questioned. "Down by the creek." He quickly took her hand and Tasha's and they ran to the house. Jonny then ran back to the bunkhouse. Mr. Thomas was grabbing a gun and Mark snatched one also. Jonny said, "What about Mrs. Thomas?" "Well she has to get to the house somehow." Without saying another word, Jonny went over to her bed. "Ma'am can I help you up? You must get to the house, there are indians. It isn't safe in here." She nodded and he helped her up. Her head had been gashed by the indians. When she was standing she felt dizzy so she could not be up for long. Jonny carefully led her to the house. "You may lie on this couch." he said. "Thank-you boy, you are so very helpful and kind." Just then Mark and Mr. Thomas came in. "I'm expecting the indians to attack any time now." said Clarence. Then Karl, Ben, and Clem came in with handfuls of guns. "Everyone take one." Jonny got up and ran to his room. He grabbed his revolver and gun belt and went back to the living room and sat down on the other couch. After a few minutes Alisha came over and sat by him. "Is that gun yours?" "Yes it is." he said proudly. "Those..." A gunshot rang out. Followed by indian yells. "Sure enough." said Pa. They had turned off all lights in the house to keep the indians unaware that people were up. "Listen, we should hear dogs barking in a minute." said Karl. A few minutes passed. Then the dogs started up a racket. "Quick the indians are down there," said Mark. "No, its an indian trick. They get the dogs stirred up and you are drawn out there, and then the indians come here to the house and kill. So do not leave." said Charles. "Oh, I did not realize that." said Mark. "Three of us will go out to save the horses but the rest of you stay." said Clem. So Clem, Charles, and Mark went to watch the horses. That means they still had seven men at the house. Jonny heard footsteps outside the door. An indian came right into the house. Mr. Thomas quickly shot him. A bunch more followed shooting arrows into the door. One arrow hit Karl's arm but he yanked it out and put a sock around the wound and kept fighting. Jonny got in a few shots too. He and Alisha were hiding in the corner behind a big wooden box. "Plug your ears!" he whispered to Alisha and then he pulled the trigger. An hour rolled by of this. Thankfully no one got seriously hurt. The indians at the door left and Clem, Charles, and Mark came back in. "We had our own fight our there too. They were trying to steal White-Foot. But they didn't get her." "Well thank God we all are not dead." said Ma.
