The next day, Jonny, Charles, and Clarence decided to do some scouting out on the higher prairie. Recklessly they swung up onto their horses, and galloped off. "Where are we going?" asked Jonny. "To the high prairie to search for clues that might give us a hint to where Ben and Karl are!" Charles said. After about thirty minutes of riding Clarence said, "Jonny, you need to go back and tell Pa and Brad to search the east prairie and then stay there and guard the family." "Ok, I guess so." Jonny agreed hesitatingly. Jonny turned White-foot around and galloped back in the direction of the house. The late summer wind blew through his long brown hair and cooled him off. White-foot loved to run wild with him on her back. She also had an ear for indians. When there was an indian nearby, even before Jonny knew it, she would stomp her feet and snort. The two galloped a long ways and then Jonny saw the house.
"Who is that?" Ma asked. "It's Jonny, I know how he rides. He is the only one that rides full speed with the wind whipping his hair." said Alisha. "Ah, well he must be bringing bad or good news." Mr. Thomas said. Just then Jonny rode up. "What's the news son?" said Pa. "Clarence said he wants you and Brad to search the east prairie for clues and for me to stay and keep an eye on you'all." "Good, have they found anything?" Pa asked. "No, but they are following a path, they think it might be an indian's route. But you better hurry, the sun will be setting soon." "Alright son, we will. Brad let's mount up." said Pa. "Ok, I'm ready." "Please be careful and take some guns with you." said Ma. "Oh I couldn't go ten minutes without my revolver." joked Pa. With that they were off. Jonny spent the afternoon washing dishes and stoking the fire. He enjoyed it especially when Alisha was there to talk to.

"Man this sure is boring! Searching this rotten prairie. It is like a maze and I'm tired and hungry." complained Charles. "Yeah this is priceless. But if we don't... Hey what's this." Clarence halted Sid and slipped of his back. "It - it's a coat." exclaimed Charles. "A wool coat. Looks like this isn't that old. Could it be?" Clarence said. "You don't think..." "Yeah I'm wondering that too. I think we are on the right track bro." "Good enough for me let's go." after a few minutes and gathering up the wool coat the rode home. They took a few minutes to mark out the path that they would follow tomorrow morning, after a good breakfast though.
