Dead body....
Those two words rung through my head for what seemed like years.
Chris tapped my thigh to knock me out of my trance, Vern started talking,
"Well, I was under the porch digging, ya know?" We all knew what Vern meant.
At the beginning of the schoolyear Vern had buried a quart jar of pennies under his porch and drew a treasure map and everything for it, ya know, kinda like a pirate. Well, a week later his mom was cleaning out his room and accidently threw the map away. Vern had been looking for those pennies for 9 months. 9 months, man! Poor Vern didn't know wither to laugh, or cry.
"Well, can you guys camp out tonight? Like, if you told your folks we would be in my back fields?", Vern rushed all this out.
I really didn't like all the ideas that the guys were throwing out, and I think Chris notice that. He grabbed my hand, "Hey, I'm sure Charlie and Billy knew Vern was under the porch and was just messing with him." He whispered, trying to make me feel better. I smiled and sighed, "I know you're lying to try and make me feel better about this, but you know I'm going with y'all no matter how stupid or dangerous it is. You guys would die without me." I whisper back and he smirks, then gives me a kiss on the forehead.
Did he just.... I hope none of the guys saw that.
Teddy looks up from his lap with a goofy smile, "Hey! I bet you guys anything that if we find him, we'll get our picture in the papers!", Chris looked at him with the same kid-like smile, "Yea! We'll be heros!"
Everyone seemed really happy... Everyone but me. My mom killed herself a few years ago, so the subject of death is a touchy topic to say the least.
The room was full of excitement until Vern got washed over with doubt again, "Wait- What'll we tell our folks? They're not gonna just let us go on a man hunt for a dead body..."
Although I wasn't stooked about seeing a dead body, I knew none of them would be smart enough to think of a good plan, so I spoke,
"Exactly what you said, Verno. We tell our folks we're tenting out in your back fields, you tell your folks you're sleeping over at Teddy's, then we say we're going to the drag races the next day. Bullet-proof 'till supper tomorrow night.", I leaned back on the couch and Chris smirked at me, impressed,
"Sounds like a plan and a half, Mar!", Chris said as he plopped down on the couch next to me.
Everyone was starting to look pretty excited again, but then again, Vern ruined it, "But, if we find the body in South Harlow they'll know we didn't go to the drag races.... We'll get hided!", Gordie shook his head,
"Nah, man! They'll be so hyped about what we found that it won't make a difference!", Vern shook his head up and down, then shook it rapidly from left to right, "But Billy and Charlie will know I was under the porch... I'LL GET HIDED!", this time Teddy laughed, "They're not gonna care, ya know why? Because it's not gonna be Billy and Charlie that find the kid. It's gonna be us guys! Not Billy and Charlie Hogan in a boosted car!", this time we all started clapping and getting excited before Vern could be a Debby- downer again.
Chris stood up, "Well, what does everybody say? Teddy?"
"Hell yeah!"
"Gordie?"
"Yeah!"
"Mar...?"
I thought about it for a moment, "Yeah, I guess so..."
Chris smirked and turned towards Vern, "Vern?"
"I don't know guys..."
The guys started egging Vern on to join and I guess he finally agreed... I'm not sure what really happened because I had zoned out. That happens a lot.
We all agreed to meet at the start of the train tracks in about an hour.
Oh, boy... What have I gotten myself into?
