We trudged down the tracks, the blazing sun burning our bodies.

"How much farther do ya think we have?", the sun was starting to get to me and I felt dizzy thinking about finding Ray's body.

"Not much. The slimy bastard's gotta be around here somewhere...", I slap Teddy's arm because making a remark about a dead kid is kinda fucked up if you think about it.

We walk in silence for what feels like 20 more minutes. It seemed like we were all in our own little dreamworld. I snap out of my thoughts and look around. The scenery around us had changed and was now more shaded.

"Hey, Teddy,"

"Yeah?"

"Is this the back Harlow road..?"

"Yeah."

Chris looked around as we came to a stop, "We should split up and make finding him easier. Teddy and Vern, you guys take the left. Gordie, Mar, and I will take the right."

We all nodded and split into our respective groups.

My knees kept getting more and more weak at the thought of finding him.

What if he was really badly hurt?

What if his last few seconds were in absolute pain and misery?

What if coming out here was the bad idea?

What if-

"I FOUND HIM! HE'S HERE! HE'S RIGHT HERE! OH MY GOD!"

I'm shaken out of my mind and my legs are subconsciously running over to the group.

My mind's racing as I peer down the hill off the tracks, at his mangled body being half-covered by bushes.

My throat starts to tighten, "Chris... Chris, I don't think..."

Chris puts his arm around my waist and I lay my head on his shoulder, "It's alright, Mar..."

Now, usually if Chris did this I would've been blushing and giggling like a school girl, but under these circumstances... nah.

We walk down the hill and stare at his body. His keds were knocked off his feet like the soul out of his body. I think the most disturbing part was just knowing that this kid wasn't sick, or tired and sleeping. He was dead. He was never waking up again and I know that.

I've never been the type to get lightheaded or be too much of a pussy to look at gory things, but something about seeing how excited my closest friends got about finding a dead body really threw me off.

I took a few steps back and sat on a log with my head between my legs and my hands on top, trying to not throw up the very small breakfast I had. I start to hear heavy breathing and faint sobs.

I turn my head to find Gordie next to me with tears streaming down his face, "Hey, Gordo, it's alright man. You're alright, dude.", I pull him into a hug and lay his head on my chest.

His tears start getting heavier, "Why'd he have to die, Mar? Why didn't have to be him? Why couldn't it have been me!?"

When Gordie's older brother, Denny, died back in April, it was hard on him. For weeks Gordie didn't come out to hang. The only time I saw him was once or twice a week when I managed to get out of the house and spend the night at his place. Even at school Gordie was distant. He was like a ghost. Oh man...

"Hey, Gordo, don't say that!", I took him by his shoulders and looked at him, "Don't ever say something like that! It shouldn't have been Denny and it shouldn't have been you. No one deserves to die at any point other than after living a nice, long life, ya hear? So, don't say things like that. We all need you, Gordo."

Chris came from behind us and dropped his arms over both of our shoulders, nodding to what I said, "Yeah, man. We all really need you."

"What d'ya know about this?"

I fling my head to the top of the hill and lay my eyes on the one and only, Ace Merril.

Eyeball comes from behind Ace, "Well, shit. My own brother..."

I turn to Chris to see no reaction, only a look of hatred and disgust. Can't say I blame Chris.

"What do you want, Ace.", I breathe out and squint my eyes at him.

Ace chuckles and nods his heads, "You know what I want, doll. I want the body... Ray's and... your's.", eyeball lets out a howl of laughter and Chris rolls his eyes,

I cringe at his attempt, "Fuck off, Ace. I have standards."

Ace looks taken aback, "Well... Just run off, doll, and we won't have any problems.."

my jaw genuinely drops at his attempt, "We're far past 'not having problems', Ace."

Chris shuffles from besides me and moves forward a little.

Ace rolls his eyes and stiffens his posture, " Look, Doll i gave you a choice. you STILL have a choice. Suck me off, we take the kid and no one has a problem... or... You be a whore, we take the kid and we kick your asses. Pretty simple.", eyeball laughs from beside him as ace nods like we really did something.

I can literally feel chris's body heat raising from beside me, and if i had ever wished it was colder outside, i would've in this moment just to cool him off because the words that leave his mouth could, and maybe will, be the death of me.
