"What do we need a gun for anyways?", Vern asked as we started our journey on the train tracks, Chris held the gun for a second and tucked it back into his sleeping bag, "I don't know, but it gets kinda spooky sleeping in the woods at night. We might see a bear or something.", I saw an opportunity to be a smartass, so I took it,
"Or a garbage can-", everyone busted out laughing like a pack of hyenas while Gordie rolled his eyes.
Such a sassy king
We continued on until we reached a small bridge, Vern sighed, "How many miles do ya think it's gonna be?", Chris put his hands on his hips and spoke, "If we follow to tracks all the way through it should be about 20 miles. Sound about right?", He said, looking at me and Gordie. I nod, "Yeah, might even be 30.", Gordie nodded as we started walking,
Vern looked grossed out, "Geez, maybe we should just hitch hike...", we all looked back at him like he was a cockroach, "No way! That's lame!" Teddy blurted out, "Hey, It's a long ways!", Vern tried to defended himself but... Yeah, no way he's gonna be able to do that.
As we walked on, crossing the bridge, Chris pulled my arm back to be by his side while the others were in front, he smiled, "Hi."
I giggle at him confused, but go along with it, "Hi..?"
He swung his arm over my shoulder as we walked, "You were so badass with Ace! I'll never have the balls to do that like you did... And you don't even have balls!", Chris and I started laughing like it was the funniest shit we've ever said.
I love moments like these. Just me and Chris. I wish it were always me and Chris...
We continued our walk and caught up with the rest of the gang, talking about the most random shit.
I had finished that last of the water from Chris' canteen because we had both finished the water from mine. I turn to Gordie,
"Water's already out.", He nods, "We can stop and fill up at the junkyard, my dad says it's a safe well.", I nod as the sun beat down on my neck and head, causing my hair to look like orange flames. Vern laughs as he pulls part of my hair, "Hey, Carrots!", I slowly turn to him as his face drops and he takes off running as I chase after him, "YOU'RE SO DEAD, TESSIO!".
We were all chilled out and walking in a comfortable silence when Vern starts to speak, "Hey, does anyone have anything to eat?", we all pause, knowing we don't have anything, Teddy throws his head back in frustration, "Well what are we supposed to do now? Eat our feet? Y'all are so dumb-",
Chris furrows his eyebrows, "What do you mean? You didn't bring anything either!", Teddy's jaw drops, "Well no shit! This wasn't my idea! Vern, why didn't you bring anything since this was your idea?!", Vern looks like his head is about to explode,
"Hey, I brought the comb, genius. What am I supposed to do? Think of everything?", he turns to me, "Why didn't you bring anything? Isn't that supposed to be your specialty or somethin-", I look at him with a blank stare, "Ima give you a chance to correct yourself before I slap the dog shit outta yo-", Chris stands between us with his arms out, breaking our argument up.
"Girls, girls, let's just count our money and go from there.", we all sit on the tracks and pull out our loot. One by one we hang our money to Gordie.
He takes Chris's money, "Alright, 68 cents from Chris...", Teddy hands him his, "$1.04 from Teddy..", Next is me, "OoOoOo a whopping $2.00 from Mary!..", next is Vern...
Gordie pauses as Vern drops his money into Gordie's hand. Gordie slowly looks up at Vern, "7 Cents, Vern? Really?", Vern drops his head in shame, "I haven't found my pennies yet...", we all bust out laughing as Gordie digs his hand in his pocket for some change, he pulls out he out 2 quarters, 1 dime, and 9 pennies, "And I got 69 cents."
Teddy, Gordie, Chris and I smirk at each other, "AH- You know what that means!", I say with an over exaggerated wink. The other guys laugh at my comment while Vern drops his head again, "We don't have enough money for chicken nuggets..."
Our jaws are officially dropped. Chris starts to speaking, "Should I-", but I cut him off, "No-... Nope.... Ley him stay pure.", we all nod in agreement, returning to the previous conversation. Gordie sighs, "Well, $4.48 isn't too bad. We can probably get some stuff at that little shop that's a little past the junkyard.",
We hop off the tracks when Chris notices a train coming, everyone but Teddy.
The train's slowly closing the gap between it and Teddy and Teddy's still not moving, despite our many yells at him to get off the tracks.
Chris finally can't take it anymore and runs up to pull him off the tracks, Teddy kicking and punching the entire time while I clinch my eyes closed so I don't have to watch Chris get run over- I mean kicked...
They were yelling for a few minutes, but I zoned out. I came back to consciousness weight in time to see them making up and "skinning it".
