I woke up to Hazel crying. "Hazel, are you OK?" I asked her. "Just listen." she told me through tears, handing me the phone. I took it and I heard my mother crying. "Mom, are you OK?" I asked, worried. "No, son. Your father...he died. I'm sorry." she told me. "WAIT, WHAT?!" I said, weeping now. "I'm sorry, son. He just died....in his sleep from a heart attack. I'm so sorry, Alexander dear. I found a note in his bedside table, it talked about how the doctor told him he could die of a heart attack anytime, but he never told us because he didn't want us to worry. In his note, he said he loved you very much, Alex." my mother told me. "I guess my child will never meet his grandpa," I said, looking at Hazel. "Yes, well- wait, child?" Mom said. "Oh, yeah. I didn't tell you because it was so early, but we are having a kid, me and Hazel." I told her.
"Oh, Alex! That's the happiest thing I've learned all day!" she told me. I could just image my mom hugging me as she learned this. "Mom, can we talk later?" I asked her. "Of course, take some time alone. Tell Hazel I said I'm happy for her, too." I hanged up and sat on my bed, weeping, face in my hands. Hazel sat next to me, patting my back. "Don't worry, trust me. Was he religious?" Hazel asked. "Yes, he went to church every Sunday and Saturday. Very religious." I told her. "Well, then our lose, his gain." Hazel hugged me and I squeezed her tightly. "Ow, Alex, don't squeeze the baby." she told me, but I could tell she was smiling. "I'll have to ask Mom when the funeral is," I told her. "I hope it's not when the trip to India is."
Hazel wrapped her arms around me. "Oh, don't worry, Alex. I love you. And the baby will be fine. Trust me." She turned and kissed me. I kissed her back and wrapped my arms around her.
We were making out, I guess. I still don't see why Daisy Wells hates me so much. I'm a good husband, trust me. "Oh, I love you too, Hazel, darling!" I said, lifting her up in my arms and spinning her around. "And at least we have a trip to India to look forward to."
That night I was asleep. I was curled up next to Hazel, holding her close to me. Hazel shifled and sat up.
"DON'T DIE, ALEXANDER! DON'T GO TO THE WAR! YOU'LL DIE!" Hazel yelled, sweating. I said next to her, wrapping my arm around her. "I'm not going to the war, it's over." I told her, making her lay down. She breathed heavily. I put my hand on her chest to help her breathe. "I am not dead, trust me. I love you, honey. I am here for the baby, I am here to be a good father. Trust me, I will never leave you. I love you." I told her. Hazel sat back up and hugged me so tightly. "Oh, and this is why I married you." she told me. I kissed her and we went back to sleep.
"I love you, Alexander."
"I love you, Hazel."
