Asher's POV:
I must have fallen asleep because when I awoke, the bed was empty. Dad was talking to some nurses. They were telling him things but he didn't seem to like what they were saying.
"Dad?" I asked.
"Hey, did you rest well?" Dad asked, coming over to be with me.
The nurses went away and he told them to come back when the doctor was ready. Dad came to sit next to me to keep me company. It was a little after 2 AM, but Dad didn't seem to care.
"Is Mom okay?" I asked.
"Your mom is in surgery right now to stop the bleed. Mom's lost a lot of blood, so they may have to take the baby out," Dad said.
I nodded snuggling up to him. He wrapped me up, leaning back. He started to pat my back almost absentmindedly. He was humming something under his breath, making me feel safe.
"We used to do this to you when you were little," Dad said.
"Why?" I asked.
"Taking after your Mom, you stayed awake even when you should have been sleeping. Mom used to stay up with you for hours trying to get you to sleep. This was the only way you would sleep," Dad said.
"I like sleeping like this now. I wish Mom were here," I said.
"Me too, darling. Me too," Dad said.
Dad held me. That was all he could do. The doctor came in rattling off vitals and things like that. I didn't understand most of it. Dad was handed a piece of paper.
I started to read it, but I didn't understand it. Dad was reading it carefully tapping the pen against the clipboard.
"What does it mean?" I asked.
"It's some general paperwork for me to sign about patients I have seen and referrals," Dad said.
"Dr. Solace, Nico's out of surgery. He's asking for you," A doctor said.
"Can I come?" I asked.
"Of course. Mom wants to see you. I know he does," Dad said.
I followed Dad and the doctor through the hospital. We passed expectant mothers and many people who were at various stages in their pregnancies. Dad stopped at a door, looking back at me.
"We don't want to scare you. There are a lot of monitors. Mom is doing well though," Dad said.
I nodded and Dad opened the door. We both went in. Mom was sitting on the bed, a nurse hanging another bag of fluids. Mom was rubbing his bump trying to calm down the baby. He does that a lot when the baby gets active.
"Nico, sunshine?" Dad asked.
Mom looked up surprised melting at the sight of Dad. They hugged each other, kissing like they would never kiss again. I stood in the back trying not to disturb them.
"Asher, come here baby," Mom said.
Tears filled my eyes and I ran over hugging Mom. Mom held me tight, patting my head gently. I sobbed into Mom's chest, trying to get as close as I could to him. He held me close kissing the top of my head.
"I didn't mean-" I started.
"I know. I love you too. I know you don't hate me," Mom interrupted.
We continued to hug until the nurse came in to check Mom's vitals again. Mom held my hand even when the nurse did everything. She logged things telling Mom that everything was looking good. Someone would be by in a few minutes to take Mom's vitals.
I got onto the bed, hugging Mom. We couldn't get close because of the ever prominent bump. Mom kissed my forehead, brushing my hair back. A doctor came in with a rolling machine.
"We need you to get off the bed," A nurse said.
"Please don't make me get up," I said.
"We need to do an ultrasound," The doctor said.
I got up joining Dad on the other side. He pulled up an extra chair as they squirted gel onto Mom's bump. They explained what they were doing and Mom got comfortable.
"Okay, there is baby. They are doing well in there too," The doctor said.
"They?" I asked, trying to make out things on the image.
"It's only one baby don't worry. The doctors and nurses say it as a formality in case we didn't want to know the gender," Dad said.
"Do you know the gender?" The nurse asked.
"It's my specialty, so it's pretty easy to tell. We're having a baby girl," Dad said.
"Oh yeah. We because you seem to be doing a lot of work," Mom said.
Everyone laughed. This is the way I always wanted to keep it. Plus my sister too. Mom spent 49 (almost 50 which I am always reminded of) in labor with my sister. Eventually, Mom and Dad welcomed Chiara Di Angelo - Solace into the world. I got to meet and even hold her the day she was born.
