They were walking, it was the middle of the night and they were tired. Amari could barely walk straight. Oltura was tired of Amari always stumbling over and accidentally pushing her to the side so she hooked one arm behind her friend's knees, the other supporting her back, and took Amari in her arms. Amari rested her head on Oltura's chest and let herself be carried, too tired to protest.
As they saw the light getting stronger through the thick leaves of the forest they realized it was finally dawn. The failed ones would be calming down now and there would be no danger. For now at least. Oltura carefully sat down with Amari on her lap. She stroked her head to wake her up knowing Amari wouldn't like that. Amari woke up and turned her head to make eye contact with Oltura.
-What are you doing? She asked as she lifted herself up and scooted off Oltura's lap.
-Waking you up. We need to be on the move if we want to make it out of this place alive. She said as she looked up. Behind the leaves covering the sky she knew there was a glass dome surrounding the entire lab AND the four exits.
She helped Amari up and they walked holding hands with their fingers entwined.
-I don't care what it takes, I will be ready to face god, death and Satan himself to change our fates and get out of this place. Oltura said with conviction.
-Why do you always speak in riddles?
-Why do you have to be so complicated?
They laughed as they headed on through the forest. They couldn't wait to get out of there. As Amari was making sure no failed ones were following them, Oltura gazed uptowards the dome, and freedom.
It was several hours later of walking, that they were not aware of the passing time but it must've been hours since it was getting dark the days seemed to go faster. Either it was their terrible perception of time, or that the days were truly going faster. The two girls saw something up ahead. It was a building that seemed abandoned. It was a small concrete structure with a few glass windows some of which were broken. The door was already open so they stepped inside.
No failed ones were in sight so they presumed it would be good place to set up camp and find some food. Amari found a plastic bag full of apples and Oltura found some bananas in a Tupperware.
Oltura created a globe of gently glowing light as they ate the fruit they had found. Despite the fact that the fruit looked like it had expired a long time ago they didn't care as long as they had something to eat that would keep them full for a while.
Oltura explored the building while Amari was on look out. She found some documents which seemed like medical charts. As Oltura looked at the charts she couldn't believe her eyes...they were charts for the experiments currently living in the lab. She knew this was bad...how would anyone know about the experiment's whereabouts! She had to show her friend. She rushed outside and grabbed Amari by the wrist.
-You need to see this, now! She said in a hurry as they both rushed towards the documents.
There were several desks in the back room. The drawers of the desks were filled with charts. They started to look through the documents of the active experiments:
