17 years later.
Jisoo.
"What the hell?" I shouted inside my room. It's that dream again. It's been bugging me for almost 2 decades now.
Really, what the hell?
I looked at the bedside table to check the time; past 2 in the morning. I heaved a deep sigh. This has been going on inconsistently for the past 17 years. Always at the same time. I noticed that it's particularly intense when the moon is half full. I never understood what it meant until now.
I'm already 27 years old now and to be perfectly honest, these dreams are getting on my nerves already. I jumped a little when I heard my phone ringing. I frowned at it thinking who might be calling at this time. I picked it up from the table to see who's calling. I rolled my eyes at no one in particular.
Of course. Why do I always keep on forgetting about this little monster?
"Hi unnie!" Jennie's voice was so enthusiastic that I rolled my eyes again.
"Deukie, what the actual hell? Why are you calling me in the wee hours of the morning?" I asked grumpily in greeting. My sister chuckled at the other end of the line.
"Unnie, I'm sorry. It's just 5 in the afternoon here. I missed you, that's why I called." I can almost see Jennie pouting. I sighed.
"You missed annoying me you little monster?" I teased.
"Unnieeeee," Jennie whined and I chuckled.
"Really, why did you call?"
"I missed you. That's the real reason. Also, I wanted to go home, unnie. It's been too lonely here without you. Why did we agree again to take on halmeoni's and hal-abeoji's business?" I chuckled again.
So much for my dream of becoming a veterinarian. Since we're the only children from our parents' side of the family, Jennie and I inherited the businesses of our grandparents. She's managing the EU region and I'm in charge of the SE region. Even though I took business management in college, I didn't let that be a hindrance to my passion. I still volunteer in animal shelters and I took short courses for animal health and anatomy. Maybe if my schedule isn't that hectic anymore, I will take more units in veterinary medicine.
"Just a little more patience, Jendeuk. There's a conference happening in the next month. I'll be able to visit you then. How are you by the way?" Jennie sighed audibly.
"It's not for another 4 weeks, unnie and seriously, I'm getting a little pissed that we're not able to do the things we used to do before. But aside from that, I'm doing good. I hope you are too and I'm sorry for ranting at you so early in the morning."
"I promise to make it up to you once I hit London next month. I have asked Lisa to take over for a couple of weeks and she has agreed already."
"Really???" I laughed.
"Yes really. I promise to visit Nini as often as I can. You know how busy we can get."
"I know, Chichu unnie. I'm sorry again. I'll wait for you next month and we'll make up for the lost time. Please take good care while I'm away, won't you?"
"Of course! What do you take me for missy? You as well, Jennie please. I miss you so much," I whispered feeling emotional. It's been 5 years since we last saw each other in person. Business has kept both of us too busy.
"I miss you more, unnie. So much. I'll wait for you here next month. We'll drink our hearts out. Please take good care of yourself, yeah? Or else Lisa will suffer the consequences."
"Take it easy on Lisa, Deukie. No wonder my best friend is terrified of you."
"As she should be! She's supposed to be looking out for you while I can't, unnie so please, she can't complain." I snorted.
"Yeah, yeah, I get the point but please, can you still take it easy on her? She's doing what she can. Speaking of, Hoyeon should be looking out for you as well or I'll beat her ass!" Jennie laughed.
"Don't worry too much about me, unnie. I'm taking care of myself. Hoyeon is doing what she can as well," Jennie said.
"Fine. Hey listen, we should probably hang up now, Deukie. I still have an early meeting tomorrow. Thank you for calling by the way. I seriously needed to hear your voice because I had the dream again." Silence.
"Deukie?" I asked.
"Again, unnie?" Jennie asked, worry is evident in her voice. There's shuffling on the phone and my sister's voice came on again.
"It's the Quarter Moon tonight that's why. Unnie, I'm getting a little worried and weirded by those dreams. It's been going on for as long as I can remember. Are you sure you don't want someone to have a look at it?" I sighed.
"It's okay, Jennie. Those dreams are harmless anyway. Don't worry about it too much. When we get some time off, let's go back to the farm. What do you think?"
"Oh I would love it too, unnie! We we're not able to come back after I was in 3rd grade. Let's plan on it once you hit London okay? Try and get a rest now unnie. I hope all goes well at your meeting later."
"Yeah, let's talk about it after my conference in London. Thank you, Deukie, for always being here. I'll see you soon! Love you, Jendeuk."
"I love you too, unnie! See you in a month. Message me when you can and take care!"
"You too. See you soon."
"See you soon, Chichu unnie!" I sighed as the call ended. After all these years, the bond between me and my sister never changed. That's what we have promised each other ever since our parents died. We only got each other. I miss her every day. Thank God for the technology to make communication easier. The only thing I hate is the time difference.
I sighed again and put the phone back to my bedside table. I laid down on the bed again and closed my eyes hoping sleep will come. I still have a few more hours.
