The Promise:Time and Death

Chapter 2

Tris heard everything he said and cried some more after he left, she didn't hate him she just wanted her brother back. She wanted the brother she use to laugh and play silly games with,the one who she went to about all her problems, the one who she could talk to for hours and not run out of things to talk about, the one who didn't leave her alone all of the time and who didn't keep so many secrets. But she couldn't tell him all of that, she wouldn't, not even when he apologized, or not even while they were yelling at each other. She wanted to tell him that she was sorry and that she didn't hate him at all. But just like always Time wasn't on her side. Time wasn't playing fair like always but she didn't know that yet. So the next day came and Tris was sitting at the island eating eggs and bacon waiting for her brother that broke his promise.
3 days went by and she did the same thing: eat breakfast waiting for him to come home, eat lunch and dinner alone just waiting for something, maybe a call or a text or just for him to walk through the door and greet her like always and laugh while he ruffled her hair. But nothing happened those three days and not the rest of the week either.She called the police after 4 days but sense he was legally grown and he had done it before it was nothing they would do so Tris waited. His girlfriend came to keep her company but just like her she hasn't heard from him either. Another week passed and it's been 2 weeks by now since Tris saw her brother. She talked to all his friends that she knew of and no one has seen him. In the beginning of the third week, Monday. August 7 , 2023 there was a knock at the door. " Hello, are you Beatrice Johnson?" A police officer questioned " Yes sir, that's me may I ask what this is about?" " Well Ms. Johnson I regret to inform you that your brother William Johnson was found" " Apparently there was a car crash 2 weeks ago and the young man that was found was burned to death and was stuck in the morgue as a John Doe" " It's only now we found DNA evidence that proves that it was in fact Mr. William" the officer said apologetically. As Tris heard that her brother was dead she was in shock but when it finally registered that he was gone she started screaming " NOOOO!!! He can't be" she slowly made her way to the floor and started crying.Loud sobs could be heard through the halls , and all through the now dull empty apartment. The officer himself even had tears in his eyes because he couldn't imagine losing anyone that close to his heart. He couldn't imagine the pain she must have been feeling. But all Tris could think about while sobbing was the last words she ever said to her brother was that she hated him. Thinking about what she said she cried even harder. Thinking about what she wanted to say still didn't make it any better. After what felt like an eternity Tris calmed down, helping her stand the officer asking if she was ok handing her a piece of tissue out of his pocket." Would you like to view what's left of the body Miss?" nodding her head and muttering yes, she went back into the apartment quickly putting her shoes on and grabbing her keys and wallet. Arriving at the morgue in the hospital the Mortician lifted the sheet to reveal an unrecognizable burnt body.Running to the nearest trash can to throw up while tears streamed down her face. After throwing up and calming herself down she walked to the officer and asked him " Was there anything that survived the crash like his phone or his dog tags that he had around his neck?" " Umm I don't think so everything in the car was unrecoverable and there was nothing around the accident site that looked to be his belongings." the officer explained she just mumbled ok and told him she was ready to leave. When she reached home the officer sent his condolences about her brother and with a sad smile and soft Thank you she went up to what is now her apartment and went straight to her brothers room sitting on his bed.
