Darrell

"Thankssss for da ride dudeeee, you're really da best," my buddy, Tyler drawled out with a stupid laugh as I dropped him off in front of his house. Whatever was so funny and making him laugh out like that, I may never know, but I've learned not to question Tyler's odd behavior, especially not when he's drunk like right now.

"Whatever, just get out of my car and try not to die getting from here to your front door," I said. Tyler groaned and stumbled up to the door of his apartment and like the good friend I am, I waited a bit, making sure he got in safely before driving off.

This was the last time I let him and the guys ever drag me to a party like that again. I sighed internally. Who was I kidding? I'd say that right now but I know deep down that the next time there's a party, I'll be the first one dressed and ready to go.

One of the seniors at our university was hosting a party — because energetic young people just have to throw parties all the time for no specific reason — and because it was the end of the semester, so they really decided to go all out, you know, the full ear-splitting music, drugs, weed (I'm so grateful none of my friends smoke or that would've been a whole other thing), alcohol, sweaty people, horny adolescents going at it in every corner, you know, real fun stuff. I'm not being sarcastic though, I really do like parties, it's just hard to enjoy them when you're worried about getting yourself and your friends home in one piece, plus, someone really thought it'd be a good idea to spike the drinks with ecstasy. Now isn't that fun. Luckily, I didn't drink that much anyways because I planned on driving, however, my guys were completely plastered by the end of the night.

Anyways, Tyler, Ricky and Shawn — the three idiots I'm unfortunate to have as friends, thought it would be a good idea to go there and drink themselves to stupor — so at the end of the day it was left to me to haul three intoxicated dimwits back to their homes before they either got hurt, did something stupid and regrettable, or all of the above. I really do love my friends, but they're not exactly the brightest tools in the shed even when they're sober and honestly, they'd all be dead without me. You know how every friend group has that one person who's exaggeratedly dumb? Well, that's all my friends except they all share a single brain cell and I'm the only one with any common sense amongst us.

Sometimes I really do hate being the responsible one and I curse my conscience for not allowing me leave them on the side of the road or in a ditch somewhere, but they're funny and add a bit of excitement to my life so they aren't completely useless, I guess. I guess.

I sighed and finally started the journey back to my own place, squinting my eyes to see in the dim lights of the road when a person stumbled onto the road out of nowhere. I expected him to move out of the way but he seemed to be heading straight for my car.

He looked drunk off his head and could barely even walk straight. That would've been Tyler, Ricky and Shawn too if they didn't have me around to take care of their drunk asses.

"Fuck!" I cursed as I just barely managed to slam the brakes in time. This crazy fucker, I thought to myself. Is he trying to die? Is he trying to get my license confiscated?

I parked my car onto the side of the road and came down. I was going to give whoever it a piece of my mind when he reached out to me and grabbed my arm, and then just collapsed, right there in the middle of the highway.

What the fuck?

My 'mother hen instincts' as Tyler called it, immediately kicked in and all rage was quickly pushed to the side and replaced with concern as I rushed to get him off the road before any other cars drove by. It might have been the dead of night but it wasn't impossible for someone to be driving by, take me for example.

I picked him up and everywhere our skin made contact felt like it was on fire. I ignored the tingling sensation I was feeling — probably an after effect of all that partying and sleep deprivation — and focused on getting him off the road. So I picked him up off the ground and carried him to the side of the road, off the highway.

I then sat down on the floor and lay him sideways down on the ground beside me with his head on my lap. He stretched his arms wrapped them around my waist, taking in deep breaths as he did so.

"Hmmmm," he hummed into my stomach. I chose not to focus on the strange feeling his touch gave me and the butterflies I felt when his voice reverberated against my abdomen and focused on the initial task at hand.

Who was this boy? Why would he go drinking so much if he couldn't even handle the alcohol? What was he doing wandering the streets in the dead of night by himself? And most importantly, why did I even care at all? I sat down on the floor with the boy and scolded him, shaking him vigorously as I did so. "Are you crazy? You could've died just now!"

Getting a closer look at the person, I realized that it was a boy that appeared to be probably the same age as me, he had a muscled body, slightly tan skin, jet black hair and I had caught a glimpse of his beautiful green eyes I wouldn't mind getting lost in... What the hell am I thinking about a person I don't even know?

I snapped out of my questionable thoughts and tried scolding him some more but he didn't even respond, he just stared right at me with a dazed look in his eyes and I swear I saw his eyes turn golden for a split second before quickly going back to green. Okay...definitely wierd.

"What's wrong with you? Why aren't you saying anything?" I questioned further choosing to ignore the boy's color changing eyes. It probably a trick of the light. It's quite dim after all, plus I'm sleep deprived, exhausted and slightly tipsy, maybe I'm hallucinating. "Hey, can you hear me?" I snapped my fingers in his face.

"Mate," was all the boy replied in a deep, husky voice before he passed out in my arms.

"What?"
