Jax and I stepped out of the apartment building and walked towards a nearby restaurant. The sun was high up in the sky, indicating that it was already afternoon.
As we walked, I couldn't help but feel self-conscious. I was walking beside a werewolf, and despite the fact that I was taller than him, he still looked like someone who could easily overpower me if he wanted to. But then again, Jax seemed to be a nice guy and something told me he wasn't going to hurt me... hopefully.
"So, what kind of food do you like?" I asked Jax as we approached the restaurant.
"I'm not very picky, but I do like meat," Jax replied with a grin, his green eyes sparkling in the sunlight.
"I should've guessed as much," I laughed.
We entered the nearby restaurant, and the aroma of sizzling meat and spices enveloped us. I led the way to my favorite table by the window, and we sat down to peruse the menu.
After a few minutes, we had both decided what to eat so the waiter came over to take our orders; Jax opted for a large steak with a glass of water, while I chose a chicken burger, fries, and some juice.
"So, you're saying that we have this unbreakable connection?" I asked, still trying to wrap my head around everything that had just happened in the last 12 hours.
"Yes, that's right," Jax replied. "We were fated to be together by the Moon Goddess. It's like we were meant to complete each other."
"But what's this mating thing even supposed to be like? Is it like dating?" I asked Jax as we waited for our food to arrive.
"Well, I guess you could say it's sort of like dating, or maybe it's more like being married. It's a lifelong bond that ties us together," he explained.
"That sounds... intense," I commented, taking a sip of my water.
"It can be. But it's also incredibly fulfilling to have that kind of connection with someone. To know that you have a partner who will always be there for you," Jax replied.
"I mean, I guess I could see how that would be appealing," I said, nodding thoughtfully. "But what if someone doesn't like their mate? You just have to be stuck with them forever?"
Jax thought for a moment before answering, "It's rare for someone not to like their mate, since the bond between mates is so strong and also because the Moon Goddess carefully assigns each pair. But it does happen, and in those cases, the mate bond can be broken forcefully, but it's incredibly difficult and painful for both parties involved and in some extreme cases, it can even lead to death. So, it's not something that should be taken lightly."
"Woah, that seems a bit... extreme?"
"Yeah, it's supposed to be like a punishment for taking the goddess's gift for granted. B-but why are you asking about it so much though? Do you not like me? Do you want to reject me?" Jax sounded worried and terrified.
"First off, calm down Jax, I didn't say I was going to reject you, I was only asking out of curiosity, I just want to understand more about werewolf culture and how it's different from human culture."
"Oh, thank goddess," he sounded relieved. "I see. Well, I'm happy to answer any questions you have."
"I appreciate that. And just to clarify, I'm not saying I don't like you Jax, I mean, I'm enjoying spending time with you right now, and I can't deny I find you attractive but considering the fact that I only just met you yesterday, it's too soon to say if I do like you but I don't think I'm going to reject you. I mean, I like you as a person but I'm not sure if I like you romantically yet. I think I like you though but I want to be able to say it for sure when I know that it isn't just because of the mating pull or whatever it's called."
That was a lot and I had no idea where such a shameless speech came from but luckily Jax didn't seem to mind.
"I guess I understand where you're coming from, you're a human and your species doesn't develop feelings as fast as my kind does. Well I like you Darrell, it might be because I'm a werewolf but it doesn't affect the quality of my feelings for you. I really do like you that means I'm willing to wait for you until you're sure before we take things further, as long as you're at least willing to give things a chance then I'm fine," Jax smiled softly at me.
"Agreed. And for the record, I'm definitely willing to give it a chance."
"Thanks Darrell."
"No problem Jax," I smiled.
The waiter re-arrived, this time with our food, and Jax and I continued our conversation, chatting about different things. We talked about our families, our hobbies, and our interests until we were done eating.
"So, what should we do now?" I asked Jax after we finished our meal at the restaurant.
"Well, I'm not very familiar with this city. Maybe you could show me around?" Jax suggested.
"Sure, I'd love to. There's a nice park nearby that we could go to if you'd like?" I offered.
Jax nodded eagerly. "That sounds great. Lead the way."
I led Jax around the city, showing him some of my favorite spots as we went by. Despite the initial awkwardness between us, I found myself enjoying Jax's company more and more as we spent time together.
As we walked through the streets, I pointed out various landmarks and places of interest, telling Jax about the history and significance of each one. We talked about our interests and hobbies, and Jax shared stories about his experiences growing up in a werewolf pack.
Despite the initial awkwardness and uncertainty between us, our conversation flowed naturally and easily. It was clear that we had a connection, and I couldn't help but feel drawn to Jax.
As we arrived at the park, Jax's eyes widened in amazement. "Wow, this is beautiful," he exclaimed, taking in the lush greenery and blooming flowers.
I smiled, happy to have shown him something new. "I come here often. It's a great place to just relax and enjoy nature."
We spent the rest of the afternoon walking through the park, talking and laughing. By the time we left, it was getting late and the sun was starting to set.
Eventually, it started to get late and I realized that we had been out for several hours.
"Wow, time flies when you're having fun," I said with a grin.
Jax nodded in agreement. "Yeah, it's been great exploring the city with you. Thanks for showing me around, Darrell."
"Anytime. I had a great time too," I replied, feeling a warmth in my chest.
As we walked back to my place, I couldn't help but feel that something had shifted between us. Maybe it was just the effects of the mating pull, or maybe it was something more. But for now, I was content to just enjoy the moment and see where things went.
