"No way, Jo. No. You can't go over there right now. Let Williams do what needs to be done first, baby." I roared, shooting up from the couch.
Her ex had just contacted her phone, talking as if he was at her house with her cat Pepper. She was already in her shoes, rummaging through her things for a jacket. She was going to go back to her house and check in on Pepper. Her cameras were disabled, and she wasn't able to see anything. I spent nearly twenty minutes trying to calm her down from an anxiety spike. My mom was on the phone with the officer that called. Somehow, Detective Williams was unreachable and that was alarming for everyone.
As much as I wanted to beat the fucker into the fucking dirt, Jo's safety was so much more important.
"Colby, Pepper is my life. She's been there for me for everything and I wouldn't feel right not seeing her. She's alone and she needs me. Now you can either come with me or stay here. Cause I am not taking no for an answer." Jo sniffed, tears streaking her cheeks.
"Angel, you need to wait until one of the officers call back and gives the okay that nothing or anyone is in the house. You can't just-"
"And you can't tell me what to do, Colby." Jo snapped straight, her eyes were wide and scared, glossed over with fresh tears. "This is my fight, not yours."
"Jo...baby." I breathed, walking over to her slowly, but she shook her head. I am hard of hearing, and collected her in my cairns, wiping her tears away. Her hands wrapped around both of my wrists to get me to stop, but I physically couldn't. I hated seeing her cry. "I think we need to wait to hear back before we even think about going over there right now."
"Colby, I can't just sit here and wait. I know I should b-but I just can't." Jo hiccupped, her bottom lip quivered. My heart leaped for her seeing her this way.
"Jo, darling, I think you should listen to him, sweetie. I don't know the whole story and that is yours to tell when you are ready. But I think it would be best to wait for right now. In case whoever is there, I don't want to see anything happen to you." My mom called from the living room. She wrapped her robe around herself now, and stood next to me on my left.
Sighing, Jo closed her eyes, tears a non stop waterfall. She sniffed and looked out the window by the door, biting her lip. She was still going to try to get out of here regardless of what we had to say. Her mouth opened as if she was going to say something, her phone then rang in her pocket. Ripping it from her side pocket, she looked at the screen and breathed out heavily answering.
"Anything?" Jo breathed. Her thumb nail instantly to her lips as she gnawed. She blinked away the rest of her tears, clutching her phone like her life depended on it. "Are you sure? Is Pepper... Is she okay?" There was a moment before she gasped, the tears gathering in her eyes again. As if on cue, she almost dropped to her knees, and screamed. The most blood curdling scream I have ever heard. My arms gripped hers, wrapping around her securely. Wailing, she dropped her phone, clutching onto my hoodie I pulled on moments ago.
"Jo? What happened?" I asked through her screams. My mom snagged her phone before I could, and walked off, talking to the detective. I don't know if she was able to discuss it, but I'm sure she worked around it.
"M-my, girl." She wailed. "My Pepper."
"Shhh, baby it's okay. I'm right here." I held her tighter, rubbing her back as she sat between my legs on the floor by the door. Snot ans tears gathers on my hoodie sleeve, as she cried. Shaking violently, I thought she was going to spasm out. I just held her, let her cry it out. She didn't have to explain it to me, I already knew.
