The Six started out as a blues-rock band called the Dunne Brothers in the mid-sixties out of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Alongside their next door neighbour, Sonni Mendoza, the trio brought to life the band we know today. Billy  and Graham Dunne were raised by single mother, Marlene Dunne, after their father, William Dunne Sr., left in 1954. In the house to their left, Sonni was raised by her two parents, Lorenzo and Avangaline Mendoza, who immigrated to America from the Philippines for their kids to live the American dream.

Sonni ' a.k.a Sunny' (bassist, the six): Everyone agreed to do this, right?

Authour: Yes, everyone agreed. Are you still comfortable to do this interview?

Sunny: Of course. So, where do I begin?

Author: Let's start with how you met the Dunne Brothers.

Sunny: Oh darling, looks like we're going all the way back to the beginning. [She lets out a chuckle]

Being the daughter of two immigrant parents came with its ups and downs. For a part of my life I really struggled with my english as I strictly spoke Tagalog home. So when I was enrolled into an elementary school in Pittsburgh, it took a bit of adjusting to get used to.

This had to be fourth or fifth grade when I started elementary in America, I'm not quite sure, I'm not the best with remembering the little things. What I am sure of though is that I used to always wear the same shirt for days because it had this cartoon of my favourite t.v show at the time. God, I cant even remember the show anymore. Well, the details of it all don't matter.

Graham (guitarist, the six): I met Sunny in the fourth grade. I remember sitting down next to her in class because I really liked her shirt, it had Huckleberry Hound printed right on the front. We were both obsessed with the show. [laughs] Sorry, I always remember the little things.

Sunny: It's always hard moving to a new school, but it was even harder being a person of colour that didn't speak english. I was lucky to have Graham Dunne sit beside me that day, he helped me with my work and I showed him how to colour in between the lines so he could impress our teacher. I think he had a crush on her.

Graham: Mrs.Smith was the prettiest teacher in all of Pittsburgh Elementary.

Sunny: I vividly remember that Graham couldn't pronounce my name correctly. It's pronounced 'SO-KNEE', but Graham just kept calling me Sunny, and it stuck with me for the rest of my life [smiles].
