Sunny: Opening for the Winters was the first time I had ever really performed for a crowd like that. It was an absolutely packed house and the energy inside that place was insane. After feeling so shitty for so long, it felt so nice to feel some sort of high.
I remember Graham had a solo in one of the songs, and the crowd... the crowd just went wild. After he had finished, I remember him turning to me and placing his hand over his heart. I mimicked his motion, letting him know that my heart was beating just like his.
After the performance we all stepped down from the stage and our adrenaline was at an all time high. I couldn't stop smiling, my cheeks physically hurt by the end of the night. As I was packing my bass up, Rick had showed up by my side.
Rick Marks (Husband of Sunny) : When I first met Sunny she looked like a maniac. She was backstage, rummaging through bags, digging in the garbage, and was just about to flip over a couch. I honestly would have thought she was a homeless woman who snuck backstage if it weren't for the light green bass slung across her shoulders [smiles].
When she told me she was looking for her guitar pick, I offered her mine in exchange for a drink. And thank god she took it from me, because there was nothing I wanted more than to talk to her again.
When I first met Billy and the Dunne Brothers at a dive bar a few weeks prior to meeting Sunny, they had some kid named Chuck Playing bass. But when I realized Sunny had replaced him, I was in shock. I hadn't seen many women rip a bass the way Sunny had on the stage that night. The girl was literally a ray of sunshine, it was like she radiated up on that stage any minute she played. I was completely mesmerized.
When they had finished their set it was our turn up on stage, but Sunny still had my pick. I walked up to where she was packing her bass, and leaned against the wall beside her. The girl was practically bouncing off the walls after her performance, and I couldn't blame her, she was the best one out there. And I told her exactly that.
She began thanking me for inviting their band to open for the Winters, and I couldn't help but fall in love with the way her voice sounded, the way she held herself, and they way she was the most genuine human being I had ever met. Sunny was always something special.
I could have stood there for days, listening to her talk about how she felt during her performance, or how she can't wait to perform for a crowd like that again. But I had a performance to get to, so I grabbed a hold of her hand that still held my pick, gave it a kiss, and took back my pick. I told her to wait for me after our show so we can talk about how she got into rock and roll over that drink she owed me before I walked off.
