Sunny: Daisy and Billy's song was everywhere... we were everywhere.
Billy: I wanted to get back into the studio right away. Cut a new album, turn a new page. You know? But that song wouldn't quit.
Graham: We got asked to join the bill at the Diamond Head festival in Hawaii. It was our first show since, um- well... [pauses].
Sunny: My birthday fell on the day of our Oahu gig, but I wasn't going to make it about me. This was pretty big for us— the band. Who cares if it was my birthday, we were playing on a stage again!
Warren: We would play with some pretty big names on that show. Steve Miller's band and The Dead would all be playing on the same stage as us. It was sick.
Sunny: The producers that invited us to perform at the festival had gotten us a little bus once we got to Hawaii. It was painted in stunning purples, blues, and yellows while the inside of the bus was decorated with streamers and dangling beads. It was a cool way to start my birthday— driving into a well-known festival packed with people who wanted to listen to us.
Eddie: We were on at one in the afternoon [sighs]. But hey, at least we were invited.
Sunny: When we got backstage and started to get warmed up for the concert, I started to feel the adrenaline getting to me. I think everyone else was feeling it too.
Graham: I felt like my heart was going to explode. At some point, Karen started handing out shots to everyone so we could all calm down.
Sunny: I didn't want to drink backstage, I didn't want to accidentally throw up in front of all those people [laughs]. You'd think I wouldn't have so much stage fright after all our performances, but that stuff never got easier for me. I'd always be so anxious or my heart would beat out of my chest, and only one person would make me feel okay again.
Billy: I really appreciated Sunny staying sober that day. It made me feel a little bit better that at least someone other than myself was sober.
Jenna: Teddy had gone out to Oahu with the band to make sure everything went on without a hitch. He was worried about Billy while I was worried about Sunny. Everyone should know by now that Sunny was delicate, and I don't mean that in a bad way. I mean it in the way that Sunny was bright and bubbly on the outside, but on the inside was a troubled girl and one wrong move could really upset her. The saddest thing is that no one would even know it—no one would know that Sunny was hurting.
