Chapter 4

She's dead.

She's dead.

She's dead.

That one simple sentence shattered me. My mother is dead.

She's dead.

I felt like I was falling. My knees touched the floor. My palms hit the surface with a loud smack.

How could she die? She was fine three days ago. I even called her last night to say goodnight before I went to bed.

I heard someone yelling in the background. From the corner of my eyes I saw movement, but I didn't care. Then I felt someone carry me. I was too numb to react. I just let the stranger carry me away.

The stranger sat me down on a chair and asked me if I was alright. I couldn't respond. I was too numb. I sat there shaking violently.

I started seeing black spots. More and more appeared. I felt dizzy and tired. The world was spinning uncontrollably. My body felt cold and stiff. I couldn't breathe. The darkness was controlling me. Soon, the darkness took over me. The last thing I remembered was someone yelling my name.

"Mom?"

"Yes sweetheart?"

"Will you always be there for me?" I had asked my mother.

She looked at me with the same beautiful hazel eyes I have.

"Yes baby, I will always be with you. Forever." She smiled at me.

Her smile always brought me happiness. It was the one thing that motivated me to make her proud and smile at me.

"You promise, mama?" I had asked her.

"Yes. Go to sleep. You'll wake up late tomorrow for your first day of fifth grade."

She kissed me goodnight and closed my door. This promise affected me because I believed it. I believed she would never leave me. She promised...
She promised.

I woke up from hearing people talking. I opened my eyes and saw two men and a woman. They were standing to the side of my bed close to the door. One man looked old, around his fifties, and the other man looked young, like in his early thirties. The woman was looking at them while they were talking. They all seemed familiar.

The youngest man glanced at me. His eyes widened. He quickly rushed to me and kneeled down beside my bed. He held my hands in his own.

"Alessia, are you alright?" He asked me.

He knew my name? I looked at him confused. Then it all clicked.

She's dead.

My mother is dead. My face paled again. I felt my vision becoming blurry. I heard a sob break out but I didn't notice it came out of me until later.

"She's dead," I whispered softly.

Tears rolled down my face uncontrollably. I felt his hands rubbing circles on my own.

"Sh sh sh, it's okay Alessia. Everything will be okay," he said in a soft voice, trying to reassure me.

"No it's not," I cried. "Nothing will ever be the same!" I screamed.

I let go of his hands and covered my face. Sobs broke out. Tears ran down my face like a river. There was no way to stop it.

"Julissa." I heard Mr. Lombardi say. "Call my PA and tell her to cancel all my meetings for today."
