THE DAY THAT WASN'T

"I swear to god if that was your 'plan' then I suggest your next move is running."

ME, THE HANDLER AND FIVE landed in a building, The Handler explaining it was another part of the Commission.

Making our way out, The Handler started conversation. "I must admit, Number Five, in all the time that I've been here, I've never met anyone like you." She spoke so animatedly, it made me want to throw up.

She was far too cheerful for someone who's killed hundreds, if not thousands of people.

"Hazel and Cha-Cha, for example, are talented, certainly, but... they can't see the big picture. Your spunk, your enterprising spirit," she grabbed Five by his shoulder and shook him a little. I was gonna beat this bitch up. "well, it reminds me a great deal of myself, if... I may be so vainglorious."

Turning into a larger building, we made our way up the stairs as the Handler continued talking. "If things work out for you here, you could potentially make a fine successor, Five." She smiled down at him.

As we got into the foyer of the building, the Handler took off her coat to reveal a lavish dress, my eyes widening just thinking about the price of it. A man took her coat, greeting her with a 'good m morning' but his efforts to be polite were futile as the Handed simply ignored him and carried on her conversation with Five. I currently felt invisible.

"I'd like to discuss the logistics of my family's safety at your earliest convenience. As well as this body replacement, will Estelle be receiving one also?" Five sounded like a robot when he talked to her. "Such chutzpah. It's refreshing, I'll admit. Slow down, Five. All in good time." Finally making our way to the top of the stairs I just shoved my hands into the pockets of my jacket in disbelief at the fact I was so invisible right now.

"In fact, now that you've finally agreed to work with us, we've got all the time in the world." She smiled to herself as she led us around the commission. She led us through a glass corridor, a small room at the end reading 'briefcase room'. Interesting.

I just zoned in and out of their conversations, nothing being interesting to me. "The commission works in support of a delicate balance between the time line of events and mankind's free will." She glanced at the briefcase room. "The briefcase is no longer part of your kit, Five. Free your mind." She put her arm around Five's shoulder again, my anger levels rising. There's something I can't put on that woman she just pisses me off. "You're management now. One of us."

"Now, Estelle, we're placing you in removals. As you know, Five here used to work in that department so I'm sure you know a little about how that works. We send out temporal assassins to eliminate anyone who affects the timeline and extract them before they can do anything else to further stop the... flow of time." She smiled down at me, finally making me feel less-invisible.

We made it to a room, the sign next to it labelled 'training'. "This is our training department. What happens here is we put our new recruits through orientation, and then teach them how to fight and hone their skills and initiative. If they can already fight, we further that experience by teaching them our way of fighting." She chuckled, placing her arm around my shoulder as we walked, Five stalking through the corridors on the other side of her.

"This is where I'll leave you, watch the orientation video and then I'll come collect you to bring you to the training grounds." I nodded, looking to Five. "See you later." I smirked at him, turning around. "Actually." He started, "Could I have a word with Estelle? Alone?" He asked the Handler, the woman immediately nodding as she walked around a corner to give us some peace.

"What is it?" I asked, my voice in a whisper. "Bathrooms. Meet me there on the lunch break. I have a feeling I know how to get out of here, and how I can find out who causes the apocalypse." I nodded to the boy, he grunted, appreciating me understanding his plan so quickly. "If something happens though, just know that I'm probably not dead. I always have a plan." I gave him a quick 'okay' as the Handler rounded the corner, a broad smile on her face as she approached us.

"Okay, Estelle just head on in and the video will already be playing. I'll lead Number Five to management." She put her arm around Five again, leading him away.

I entered the room and sat down, a man at the front near enough fast asleep in a chair at the front of the room. Sitting down, I crossed my arms and watched the video.

A buzzer sounded throughout the room, making me jolt in my seat. I had zoned out for so long that I didn't even realise I had zoned out.

"Lunch break." Sounded over the intercom, the worker at the front not even flinching in their sleep.

Hastily standing and making my way past other recruits, I left through the door and followed some signs to get to the bathroom. I saw the familiar figure of Five at the end of the hallway leading to the bathrooms.

I smiled when I saw him, he gave me a smirk. "Come on, we don't have a lot of time." He ushered my into the bathroom and to the middle stall, putting his hand on the small of my back as we got into the stall.

Five sat on the toilet seat, grabbing a file from inside his jumper. "Is that what you're hoping will tell us who starts the apocalypse?" I asked, leaning in closer to get a better look at the case file. "Yeah. I asked who my case manager was and the Handler, surprisingly, told me. I stole the woman's file and here we are." Five gave me a tight lipped smile, I just rolled my eyes.

He seemed to notice my annoyance, as he stood abruptly from the seat of the toilet, a "What?" Coming in my direction. "Stop giving me that smile, Five. Do you remember what I said in the library?" I huffed. He nodded slowly. "Vaguely, but remind me anyway." He didn't remember.

"I said you had a nice smile, and that you should do it more." I looked to his lips then back to his eyes. "That 'smile' you just did wasn't a real one. When you want to smile, only give me real ones. None of those constipated ones, alright?" He simply nodded.

A, now familiar, clicking of heels made their way into the bathroom, making their way to a stall next to the one Five and I were in.

"So how's your first day going?" The infuriating woman asked, closing the stall door. "Couldn't be better." Five replied, nearly sarcastically.

"Glad to hear it." The pudding noises started and I wanted to throw up.

I leaned into Five ear and whispered a "sorry, meet me in front of the orientation room to tell me your plan." I then jumped out of the bathroom and back into the orientation room. I sat back and down and...

I waited.
