july 4 2002

This was the first time in about a month Nakia had fallen asleep. The last night of sleep she had was when Ben had given her a Walkman. It didn't seem to help much but she appreciated it nonetheless.

But when Nakia awoke she felt strange. It was pitch black and dark. There was a slight breeze, and she immediately began to shiver. Where was she? She definitely wasn't home. Her eyes widened as she saw a glowing light.

Yeah, she definitely wasn't home.

"Hello?"

Nakia froze. She wasn't alone.

"Hello? Please."

Nakia was perplexed. She knew better than to walk to creepy sounds. That's how you ended up dead in a ditch. But what if this person needed help? They could be in danger.

"Please,"

Nakia slowly walked to the light. It grew brighter and brighter until suddenly it was barely dark anymore.

"Hello?" she asked. "Ben? Vanya?"

"I-In here," the voice answered.

Nakia was in a room. The light was flickering and the walls were chipped. The air was dry and full of dust. In the middle of the room was a girl.

Nakia raised her eyebrows. The girl was around her age, she couldn't have been more than thirteen. She had short light brown hair and dark green eyes. She wore a dark shirt and pink plaid pants. She had tears streaming down her dirty cheeks. She had no shoes and a chain wrapped around her ankle.

"Who are you," Nakia asked. "Where are we?"

"You have to get me out of here,"

"Where is here exactly?"

"Please,"

"Just tell me where we are," Nakia pleaded.

"Space," the girl told her. "I think we're in s-space."

"Space," Nakia repeated.

The girl nodded her head vigorously.

Nakia's eyes narrowed as she looked around. There was a cot next to the girl, and a door at the end of the room. The girl was obviously delusional. How did she get here? How did the girl get here? She clearly needed medical attention.

The mysterious girl put her head on her knees as she continued to cry. Nakia ran over to the door, trying to find a way to open it. She pulled and pushed but the stupid door wouldn't budge. The girl sobbed harder. Nakia saw no windows in the room. She had no idea where she was.

She ran back over to the girl and shook her shoulders.

"Hey," she whispered. "Hey! Where are we?! Who are you?!"

The girl didn't answer, her body racking with sobs.

"Come on," Nakia pushed. "How long have you been here?"

"Since my-m-my parents died," the girl answered. "I don't know."

"You don't know," Nakia repeated.

This was unbelievable. A couple of hours ago she was worrying about sleep and her family issues. Now she'd never know if she'd see them again. She turned to the girl.

"How did I get here," Nakia asked her. "Tell me how I got here!"

"I don't know,"

"You have to give me more than that,"

"I d-don't know!"

The girl grew quiet. She stared Nakia dead in the eyes.

"You're the first person to visit me."

"Besides him."

"Him?"

"Him."

Nakia had to get her out of there. She didn't understand what was going on but if this girl was this terrified, something horrible was going on.

"Alright," Nakia said firmly, crouching down. "I'm going to get you out of here."

She opened her palm, waiting for a flame or even a spark to erupt from her hand. She planned to burn the chain off. Butt her powers didn't seem to be working.

"What the hell," she muttered.

"It won't work,"

"What did you say?" Nakia asked.

"Your powers," the girl clarified. "They don't work here."

"Powers," Nakia asked baffled. "Do YOU have powers?"

"Yes," she whispers.

Powers? She didn't look like any of her siblings. So who exactly was this girl?

Suddenly Nakia felt something. She heard footsteps, and creaking of the floor. The girl's eyes grew wide.

"You have to g-go," she muttered.

"What," Nakia frowned. "I can't leave you."

"Nakia,"

"If he finds you you'll be stuck,"

"Nakia,"

"I can't leave you here!"

"P-please, you need to go, NOW!"

Nakia heard the noise getting closer and closer.

"Nakia,"

"I don't even know you're name," Nakia yelled. "How will I find you?"

"NAKIA!"

And as Nakia Hargreeves faded away, the last thing she heard before she saw a purple blob was the most beautiful name she had ever heard.

"Ophelia," the girl had whispered, smiling slightly. "Ophelia Reece."
