The funeral was quiet. Only a handful of people were present. It wasn't like he knew a bunch of people. Half of his family was already in the ground.

In the end, Nakia and Charlie were the last ones at his grave. They refused to move, staring as the November wind blew past their faces.

Nakia had gotten stitched up and was strictly advised not to do any drastic activities for at least a month.

But everyone knew that wasn't going to last long.

Thomas left everything to Charlie. His house, his car, and his bank assets were left to his older brother. Nakia was happy to hear that Charlie was going to fix the house and put it on the market.

The only problem was that Charlie couldn't fully adopt Nakia. The Council wouldn't allow it. Thomas was willing to fight it because he was a Level Seven agent but Charlie was just a random civilian, he technically wasn't supposed to know about Nakia or her abilities.

So now she basically had to walk into S.H.I.E.L.D. and beg Ross and Pierce to not stick her in a jail cell for the rest of her life.

Nakia was getting a massive headache. The back and forth between the agents in the room were not helping. Ross was threatening to move her to one of those quiet military bases where she'd stay unless she was absolutely needed.

Of course, Fury thought that was just incredibly unethical. He was arguing that she should be staying with someone she trusted which Ross thought was extremely risky.

At the end of the day, Pierce and the Council had to make the final decision that probably changes her life forever.

And she'd get no say in anything.

Like usual.

After an hour of back and forth between Ross and Fury, Nakia had an idea to shut the both of them up.

"How about I just work for S.H.I.E.L.D.?"

"What did you say, young lady," Pierce asked.

"I said I should just work here," Nakia repeated. "I got the powers, I don't have anything else to do with my life and I don't have to leave - I can stay here with my friends."

"Kid, are you sure that's what you want," Nick asked.

"It's not like I have any other choice," she muttered. "I either stay and work for the government or you send me to a military base and I become some lab rat's guinea pig. "

The council members looked at each other. They all agreed it was a solid idea.

"I will be doing weekly updates just to make sure that everything is running smoothly."

"And I'd love nothing more," Nakia smiled, sarcastically. Ross rolled his eyes before leaving the room.

"Well then," Pierce spoke up. "Miss Hargreeves, welcome to S.H.I.E.L.D."
