Bethane's POV:

The next day, I get back to my regular schedule and am feeling much better.

When I get to work, I see Tom; a fellow employee of mine sitting at my desk. A smirk oddly appears on his lips when he sees my confused look, and I'm unsure of what's going on because one, we've only spoken once and that was to ask where my office was, and two, he's sitting at my desk.

"Oh, Bethane," Attorney White walks up from behind me.

I turn myself around with a forced, professional smile.

"Tom is going to be taking over your office and you won't have to work today since we're still cleaning out the storage room for your new one," he explains what's happening.

I can't hide my heart beating faster with anger. I would be just disappointed, but Tom knew this was going to happen which must have been why he was smirking at me.

I shoot my head towards him to see if I saw his odd expression wrong, but nope. He just smiles and waves at me almost mockingly, acting as if he's clueless.

Although, then I remember that at the end of the day, Attorney White is my boss, and disobeying him could make me lose my entire future so I calm myself down relatively quickly.

I turn my head back around, taking an internalized deep breath.

"Yes sir, I'll see you tomorrow," I force my kindness and grin out.

"Have a good day," Attorney White wishes me, and I say the same back respectfully.

"Hey, Bethane." Tom pops up behind me randomly the second Attorney White shuts the door to his office.

"Hey Tom," I grit out, showing him that I'm not affected by this change whatsoever. Maybe he had no part in this. Maybe he feels bad and just isn't showing it.

"Hey, sorry about taking your office."

See, he does feel bad.

"It's alright. Don't worry about it." I feel more at ease now knowing that he had no part in this and it was just a random switch that Attorney White thought would be best.

Tom grins. "I had spoken to Attorney White and told him that you would make such a great secretary from anywhere in the building, so why waste a spacious room? Plus, I think it'll work out best this way since I'm about to start my career as an actual attorney." I almost choke on my own spit when I hear those words confidently fall out of his mouth.

I'm truly at a loss for words. What are words actually?

"You understand, right?"

I have to physically refrain from letting my fists fly because of that condescending question.

Bethane, this is a major opportunity. You can't screw this up for yourself because of some misogynistic dick who you would love to kick right in the balls. I'm almost tempted to pull out my taser, but why let him win by throwing the first punch? I am going to be a lawyer no matter what this douchebag says and I've worked my ass off to get here. I can't mess up my chances before I've even begun.

"Are your parent's lawyers as well?" I decide to casually ask, taking a different route.

"They are actually. You heard of them?" He smirks, smug.

"No, I can tell though." I nod enthusiastically in a way that he can hopefully tell is not genuine.

"What do you mean?" He's abruptly taken aback, laughing in that manner that guys do when they realize that maybe everybody doesn't find them charming.
