There once was a virus in the boiling isles, basically reanimating the dead (zombies, think The Walking Dead type but more dangerous since magic) and Belos did eradicate it by genocide of villages/witches developed immunities to it, but it was still There, dormant.

Edalyn had a potion which was contaminated with said virus (this is like when she was in her late 40's early 50's, otherwise known as a few years before the show takes place. She uses it as self defense against an attacking human, thereby giving earth a zombie virus.

It quickly spreads, sending the world into a zombie apocalypse, being transmissible any way scientifically possible. The world is in ruins by the start of the show/when Luz would have been going to summer camp (had there been no zombies), completely alone besides Lucia (this is going to be very important later) and running out of food, water, basic living supplies.

They are always on the move, getting more and more desperate as they lose hope in living. One day, Lucia gets injured while they were running away from zombies, and pushes Luz into the demon realm by accident while fighting off zombies. Lucia ends up dying in the process, but also becomes a zombie.

Luz is in grief, losing her only loved one and being stuck in a completely different place, but meets Eda (who felt real bad about bringing the virus to the human realm but couldn't fix it fast enough, so she takes Luz in as a sort of repayment). Cue the regular Owl House first episode, with a few changes (Vee doesn't go through the portal the same, hides in the forest as a little critter or sum) And Luz having much, *much* less motivation to go back, because what is there to go back for?

Meanwhile Lucia is wandering around aimlessly, doing zombie things. She stumbles (literally) on a magic, Boiling Isles potion, and breaks it onto a old broken up saxophone, turning it into something that even zombies with no functioning lungs could use. Something in that saxophone called at Lucia, so she blows and produces a note, sort of slowly gaining intelligence.

In the empty parking lot, the note bounces off and echoes beautifully, making Lucia *feel* something for the first time in months after being turned into a zombie. She plays for a long time, attracting a horde of other zombies. She gains a sort of intelligence (not adult smarts, more young child smarts) playing the saxophone, now also being able to bring zombies together with a few notes.

She finds roller skates, and traverses the country, playing the saxophone while finally having the time to appreciate nature.
