"He raped her..." Grace cried in pain.
"Who?" Asks Kirsty in shock, holding a sobbing Grace in her arms.
"My father...Frank."
Kirsty gasped. "Uncle Frank." She said his name and shivered. "Who did he...rape?"
"My... Mother" Grace cried harder.
Kirsty held Grace more tightly, tears springing from the corners of her eyes. She held Grace close, like a mother holding a small child.
"He raped... My mother was a nun...tortured her...." Her nails digging into kirsty's skin. "...I'm a child of...rape and Sin."
Kirsty moved Grace out of her arms and stared into Grace's eyes. "Don't you dare talk like that. I know what your going to say next...and your not a bastard child." Kirsty snapped, her voice was strong. "Do you understand me, don't you think that, ever! Your my sister, no matter what."
Grace sniffles and nods her head.
Kirsty looks at Grace with blurry eyes.
"I'm sorry." Grace apologies with a high pitch child-like voice.
Kirsty smiles sadly. "Now...tell me what you saw at work"
Grace gulps. She moves of the bed and stands in the middle of the room. Her eyes staring at the chipped paint on the walls. She wrapped her arms around herself.
Kirsty never seen Grace so small. She looked lost and lonely.
"Grace. Your going to have to trust me."
"You will think I'm crazy."
"I won't. There's one thing I know about you...you can't lie for shit."
Grace laughs and wipes her eyes. She tells Kirsty everything that happened at work yesterday. The things she saw. Grace's body was shaking as she told Kirsty everything.
"Go on..." Kirsty encouraged.
"I was staring in the mirror and I started seeing things. It was like watching the television. I saw Julia... She was seducing a man... He was removing his cloths."
"Where?"
"My bedroom...they were talking but I couldn't hear them... The man went to leave...I saw Julia grab the hammer and hit him in the back of his head at first then continued to hit him... Then this thing...it looked human with no skin, crawled out from under my bed...I watched it suck the life out of the man..." She paused taking a couple of deep breaths. "... When I got home, there was no blood or body or anything..."
"The hammer." Asks Kirsty.
Grace looked at Kirsty. "Gone."
Kirsty frowned. "What do you mean gone?"
"Gone. I can't find it anywhere. I've looked all over." Grace screamed like a mad woman.
"Did you check Larry's bedroom?"
Grace shook her head. "No. Julia was in there."
"I will help...I've always had this feeling with Julia... She's odd..." Kirsty promised.
"You help me? Why?"
Kirsty smiles. "I need to protect you and daddy."
"Your serious. You believe me."
Kirsty nods her head. "Let's go." Kirsty grabs her coat and heads for the door.
"Where are we going?" Grace calls, quickly to catch up to Kirsty.
"The church...."
"I want access to experience...pleasures...that only they could offer..."
"The...Cenobites." asks Julia.
"That's what they call themselves. There not human. Maybe they were once, but they're not now. They rearrange their own flesh for pleasure."
Frank is dressed in loose fitting jacket and trousers, through which his blood is seeping through the fabric. He smokes, taking great pleasure in the experience.
"And the box?" Julia eyes the box. She remembers Grace carrying it around with her as a child. The one thing made her happy.
Frank picks up the box. Vague, tantalising forms move over the surface, like ghosts.
"It cost me a fortune. All I had. It's a puzzle you see. You solve it, and the Cenobites come through..."
"But Grace solved it all the time. How come we didn't see them?" Asks Julia curiously.
Frank shrugged his shoulders. "I don't know. It's something we will have to ask her."
"She doesn't remember much, the treatments have blocked out memories of her childhood." She tells him. "Where do the Cenobites come from?"
"God knows. Sometimes I think they're just behind the walls..."
Frank turns the box over. The lacquer catches the light.
" So they cheated you?"
In the lacquer Frank sees oiled bodies moving. Is this torture, or some elaborate pleasure?
"Oh no. They kept their bargain. They gave me experiences I'd never forget."
The images in the lacquer becomes clear, and they are appalling. Flesh torn open, blood running across sweaty flesh; hooks, and terrible machines.
"But their pleasure was my pain."
Frank's voice began to tremble. The images in the box are more horrific by the moment. And flowing between them, highly distorted, the Cenobites faces, and that of Frank, screaming and screaming.
"Terrible pain. Appalling..."
He can't speak for a moment. After a pause, bhe goes on, his voice heavy.
"... My body was forfeit. By my spirit... They left that here. In the board's."
"And the blood let you out?"
Frank looks at Julia. "There are ways to resurrection. Bloods one of them. A virgin is another. I won't let them take me back, Julia."
Julia looks at the horrors in the box, and understands his desire.
"I want to be whole... I won't let them take me."
"You won't have to. We'll be gone. Somewhere they'll never find us. Not in the whole wide world." Julia promised Frank.
Thunder rumbles as Grace and Kirsty stare at the large gothic building. A huge church stands in front of them with freshly painted bricks. Dark brown arched doors were wide open to the public as they could hear singing coming from inside.
Saint Agatha Convent.
Kirsty holds onto Grace's hand. "Are you sure you want to do this?"
"It's the only convent here. It has to be the one... I have too start from somewhere."
Grace straightened her spine and walks up with her head held up high.bshe walks in at snails pace as the shadows of the building covers their body's.
A flash of light cuts through the sky followed by a loud roar of thunder. Car alarms and street lights cut out. Dogs barking.
"This feels like a fucking horror movie." Kirsty whispers.
Grace snickers.
"I hate horror movies." Kirsty tells Grace.
"Why did you go and see the Exorcist." Grace questioned.
"I didn't want to seem like a chicken in front of Steve." Kirsty confessed.
Grace smirked. "Pussy."
The smirk falls from Grace's lips as she steps inside the building. The room was bright, with colourful windows and pictures of Jesus and statues of Mary. Rows and rows of seats were on both sides of the room.
At the front was a large stage. About thirty nuns were singing lovely.
Grace and Kirsty sat in the middle row. Both in their own thoughts.
The singing stopped. Some nuns left through the side door. Three older nuns stayed behind. Two looked to be in their late fifties and the other much older. They whispered to each other and walked towards both women. The older nun stared at Grace with knowing eyes.
"Can we help you." One of the nuns asked.
Kirsty nods, looking at Grace who seemed to have frozen up.
"Yes we need help...well my sister does. She wanted to ask you some questions, if that's okay with you."
Three sets of eyes looked to Grace.
Grace wanted to shrink back and hide. She gulped.
"You want to know about your mother,am I correct, child?" The older nun asked.
Grace and Kirsty eyes widened in disbelief.
"Yes...do you know her? What was she like."
The older nun gave Grace a tight smile. "Nikoletta was a sweet young child. She came to us as a baby, she was left on out door step. Her parents were drug addicts..." The older nun took Grace's hand and pulled her along to the side door and down a long dark corridor.
"They were well known, both parents were in the movie business. Your grandfather was a actor and your grandmother made costumes. They had money, but things changed when she became pregnant with Nikoletta. Both parents couldn't cope with the baby, they wanted their fix and parties than have a baby...so one night they knocked on the doors and asked for help. I answered the door, no parents only the child....I knew who she belonged too as her parents tried to leave their baby here many times...." She explained.
Kirsty and Grace listened as the nun told them about her mother. They watched as she pulled a key from her pocket and unlocked the door. She opened the door and stepped inside.
Grace stepped inside first and looked around the cream coloured walls. A cross above the bed and draws in the corner. Pages of bible were ripped and scattered the floor.
"This was Nikoletta's room. I raised her myself. Gave her the love and motherly attention she needed. When your mother came, she has no name, so I gave her one. Nikoletta was my mother's name."
Grace smiles. "It's a beautiful name."
The nun sighed. "It is."
"What was Nikoletta like." Kirsty asked.
"Bubbly girl. always exploring these always, trying to find secret passage ways. She was adventurous and mischievous. She always made me smile."
"How did she meet..." Grace wanted to ask how her mother met Frank but she was scared to ask.
"Nikoletta just turned eighteen. She was in the gardens at the front building cutting roses. A young man came up to her and he started talking to her... I watched from the window... Nikoletta didn't understand men...but he could see it...it was his eyes that frightened me...I could see his intentions towards her...I did what any mother would do to protect her child...I brought her inside the building..."
"He was obsessed with my mother?" Grace asked in a whisper.
The nun nodded slowly.
"I don't know how he got into the building...but when I came to get her up for morning prayer...I found her on the floor...her face....I couldn't recognise her....there was so much blood..." The nun cried.
Grace and Kirsty held each hand of the nun for comfort.
"What he did...he used a small virgin Mary ornament on her behind...his seed soaked the bible pages...what he did she never recovered. A few months later, Nikoletta started getting sick. We called the doctors and found out she was pregnant with you. She gave birth to you in the baptism pool, it was her choosing. I think she wanted to protect you from the devil as much as she could." She explained.
"What was she like...with me."
"Strong. She loved you so much... She always sang a tune, like what you get when you open a music box... It made you sleep for hours... But she became obsessed with locking the doors...always screaming at God for not helping her... She started punishing herself till the point she passed out...I was worried that she hurt you...so I did what must be done for your safety...I took you from her... Nikoletta never forgave me."
Grace and Kirsty cried.
"Your mother went missing not long after...only thing we found was a puzzle box..."
