Chapter 16- Hayden
I don't regret telling about Sapphire's dad. What the man did was wrong and he knew it. He not only put other students in danger, but his own daughter. What kind of man does that?
After the principle Watson explained to Sapphire that her dad would be sent to prison she ran out of the office, Gideon following shortly after.
" I'm gonna go talk to Gideon," Irene informed me then left swiftly and quietly.
I was left with the principle and Marcus. We stared at each other awkwardly before I asked if he knew what was going on.
" No," he said flabbergasted, " And I never would of guessed it in a million years. Mr Orbit are you sure that is what you saw? It doesn't sound like Coach Holloway."
" I'm positive," he confirmed a beat later.
There was a pause before the Mr. Watson muttered what a shame it was.
" You guys can go now."
We turned to leave but I paused at the threshold.
" Hayden," Marcus hollered, " Are you coming?"
I looked over at him. " I'll catch up with you in a second. Will you let Chris know?"
" Ya," he agreed before heading off to rehearsal.
I went back into the office and sat back down in the plush brown leather chair.
The principle peered up from his computer screen, his brow furrowing.
" Did you forget something Mr. Rodgers?"
" Umm. No sir. I wanted to ask you something about Sapphire."
He gestured his hands for me to go on.
" Is child services really necessary? Ain't there any other options? Could't she live with someone else? Another guardian? A sibling?"
Mr. Watson rubs his temples and squeezed the bridge of his nose.
" Yes Mr. Rodgers. I'm afraid it is."
" But why?"
He looked me tiredly in the eye before sighing softy.
" I would tell you son, but that is private information... Its not right..."
" Screw if its private," I interrupted, " I needed to know..... Please."
After five minutes of batting lashes and deep sighs Principle Watson gave in.
" Well the main factor is that she is not eighteen yet so she needs some kind of adult supervision since she is still a minor. Her mother is not around, she has no other siblings or guardians, and since we don't want her out of the street child servies will probably put her in foster care until she is an adult."
" I'm sorry," I apologized after his reasonings, " But what is foster care?"
I remember Vi once read a book about a teenager who was put in foster care, but she never fully said what it was and I never did get the concept.
" Foster care," he asked confused, " Oh that is basically where people who don't have parents or guardians live in a home until someone decides to take them into there care."
" So like adoption!"
Mr Watson shock his head quickly. " Oh no its not like adoption."
