Chapter Fourteen - Through Fortune And Flame We Fall

The next morning I woke early; feeling reenergised from the great night's sleep I'd just had. Everyone else was still sleeping and I didn't want to wake them so I grabbed myself two pop-tarts from an open box and munched on them as I started to draw. I drew a detailed realistic eye in the middle of the page, crying and filled with tears. The tears dripped down a cheek and rolled off, splashing down to the ground below. It was slightly depressing - but then again, most of the stuff I draw is.

"Hey, that's really good." I looked up; startled - to see Gerard standing above me, smiling.

"God, you gave me a heart attack!" I murmured, blushing and standing up, crumpling up the drawing in my head tightly.

"What are you doing that for?" Gerard asked, frowning as I ruined the paper in my hand - squeezing it into a tight ball.

I blushed a deeper red, but continued ruining my drawing,

"It's rubbish."

"No it's not. Would you destroy something perfect in order to make it beautiful?"

I only looked at Gerard curiously: but my grip loosened around the piece of paper and I stopped scrunching it up.

"Sorry, it's a quote of mine. You know how it is." Gerard let out a bark of laughter but I couldn't share his happiness. He noticed my solemn expression and cupped my cheek in his hand, rubbing it with an ice-cold finger.

"Thorn? What's wrong?" I squirmed away from his cold touch,

"N-nothing..." I stuttered at the close proximity of us two. My stomach gurgled quietly and I chewed on my lip.

"You're nervous." Gerard concluded after looking deep in my eyes for ten seconds.

I nodded slightly.

"Why?" He asked simply.

"I...I just have a bad feeling about this."

"About what? Having a shower?"

"I know, I'm only being stupid..."

Gerard sighed,

"Come on Thorn." He held his arms out in a warm hug and I stepped into his delightful embrace, breathing him in as he wrapped his strong arms around me and lightly kissed my neck.

We huddled on the ground together and Gerard softly started singing in my ear. I instantly recognised the song as Desert Song and sighed softly into his chest as he rocked me back and forth on the floor like I was the only one who mattered.

"Did we all fall down? Did we all fall down? Did we all fall down? Did we all fall down? From the lights to the pavement, from the van to the floor, from backstage to the doctor, from the Earth to the morgue, morgue, morgue, morgue..."

The words were hushed in my ear but I heard them perfectly and very soon my eyelids began to droop.

"All fall down, well after all..." Gerard finished Desert Song - but by that time I was already fast asleep. He started on My Way Home Is Through You and even though I was sleeping, I could hear the lyrics clearly and tears started to trickle from my eyes.

"Gonna take off all my skin, tear apart all of my insides when they rifle in, mom and dad think you'll be saved, they never had the time, they're gonna medicate your lives, you were always born a crime, we salute you in your grave..."
