Chapter Sixteen - Amen, And Goodbye

We made it back to the basecamp with (luckily) not too many tears, and Gerard still cradling his younger brother to his chest and mooching off in front of us belligerently.

We all knew he needed his space, and so didn't crowd him - standing a couple of metres behind, us girls sniffling and the guys protecting our asses from some more of the bloodsuckers with their pointy sticks.

Luckily the Vamps stayed away, probably sensing if they came anywhere within a radius of Gerard holding his brother they'd all end up a messy pulp of bloody flesh on the ground with a handful of stakes up their backsides.

Once inside the basecamp, we didn't quite know what to do and so all stood around awkwardly, Gerard focusing entirely on Mikey and not at all on anything else. Elena was still crying slightly, but my tear ducts had dried up and no more salty tears were paving tracks down my face. I could tell the guys were sad too, although Bob hid it well, as did Sam; but they were both terribly upset. Lou Taylor and Kit were sad as well, since it was the death of a band member from their favourite band. And Ray, well...although him and Flame aren't an 'item' I sure am glad he's got her to comfort him.

The door was securely closed behind us and locked, and Gerard placed Mikey on the couch,

"Are...are we...are w-we going to hold a...a, a funeral?" Gerard asked, voice breaking and tears brimming in his hazel orbs.

Bob shifted from foot to foot,

"Well, we can't really bury him...but a ceremony of some sort..."

"Can we do it now?" Gerard asked, swallowing a lump in his throat.

"Y-yes." Bob replied. Elena got a white sheet from the cupboard where we had found the stuff for our beds, and handed it silently to Gerard.

We all watched with sorrow as he placed it wordlessly over his brother's dead body, and then pulled it over Mikey's head. The frame of his glasses jutting through the fabric made me choke on my deep, trembling breathing and I felt my sore red eyes itch with new tears.

"Goodbye Mikey..." Gerard breathed, planting a kiss on the white cloth that covered his younger brother's forehead, tears trickling down his cheeks.

Gerard stepped back and Elena stood in front of Mikey, mumbling out words and sobbing uncontrollably.

"I love you Mikey," She whispered as she stepped away, "I love you and I should of told you and I regret not telling you. I know we hardly knew each other, and not for very long, but I love you..." Tears trickled down her cheeks as she faced us. I was surprised; she loved Mikey?! Wow. That was quick.

Gerard enveloped her in a hug; they were going through the same thing - they'd both loved Mikey more than the rest of us, and Gerard had known him the longest, the brothers had always been there for each other; through good and bad.

Everyone else stepped up to say goodbye to their friend - and then it was my time.

I clasped Mikey's hand through the sheet, kneeling down and resting my head on his cold chest.

"Goodbye Mikey. I'm so sorry that it had to end this way; I feel responsible in some way. Why couldn't I have gotten there quicker, or been in there with you to help you? I've always been useless - and I never said sorry for knocking you out with the boxes on the way back to the supplies room. Gerard said you wouldn't mind; and it didn't seem like you did, but I'm still terribly sorry. I knocked you clean cold: and then fell on you. I already miss you terribly. I know I can't change fate, but I wish I could. You don't deserve this Mikey, you deserve everything and more. Not this. No. I'm sorry. Goodbye."
