(A/N: this was inspired by a headcanon that -_Horror_Writer_- saw and then told me about. The headcanon in question is that Poe secretly has a lot of love novels that he never shows anyone because they're all about Ranpo. Without further ado, enjoy!)

Poe had a secret. A very very deep, dark secret. One that he could never, under any circumstances, let anyone find out about. Ever. Not as long as he lived, and not after he died, either. He'd take that secret to the grave with him no matter what.

...

He had written a lot of love novels. He realized that it probably sounded strange given his whole "angsty poet" image, but it was true. And they weren't fiction. And they also weren't about just anyone.

No, indeed.

They were about none other than his longtime rival, Ranpo.

It had first happened shortly after Ranpo had defeated him all those years ago. He had still felt really low as a result of it, but he'd found himself writing his very first love novel about Ranpo. Once he'd realized what he was doing, he'd definitely panicked over it and questioned everything...but that didn't stop him from writing the novels. He'd only continued to do so.

Now, he couldn't tell anyone about this for many obvious reasons, including but not limited to: he was in love with his rival, of all people. Plus, Ranpo would probably never like him back. They were just rivals after all, weren't they? And wasn't that all they would remain?

Though if Poe was being honest, sometimes he did allow himself to wonder if maybe, just maybe, he and Ranpo could potentially be something more. Sometimes when they were hanging out, he just wanted to reach out and-

No, no, no! Stop thinking like that! Poe thought. He was probably a fool to ever even think that he and Ranpo could be more than just rivals.

And yet...he couldn't help it. Sometimes he even went as far to wonder if maybe Ranpo felt the same. They'd had their moments, after all. Would it be so crazy to think about said moments and think that Ranpo might at least see him as a friend and not just a rival?

...Yes. It would be.

Poe often wrestled with his own thoughts over it. He wanted to believe Ranpo would feel the same, but logic constantly told him that it would never happen.

And so he continued on like that, having the classic head versus heart battle, until one fateful day. One that Poe would come to rue...

"Poooooeeeeeee...where's your next book?" Ranpo complained, lounging on the couch in Poe's study as the writer sat at his desk.

Poe sighed. "Calm down, it'll be done soon."

"How soon is soon?"

"...I don't know. However long it takes to finally stump you."

"Welp, guess I'll be waiting forever then."

Poe rolled his eyes, laughing a little.

Ranpo grinned. "Sorry, Ed. But you can never beat the master detective that is me."

Poe froze, glancing at Ranpo. Did he just...use my first name...?

"Poe?" Ranpo asked, glancing at his rival.

Poe blinked. "Sorry, what?"

"You randomly froze. Are you ok?"

"Yeah!"

"Are you sure?"

"Mhm!"

"Alright...hey, wait. Where are my snacks?"
