Tony’s POV

“You guys are welcome to stay.” Tony’s voice comes out clear. “I’ll cancel the plane.”

Tony excuses himself from the group and goes back inside to relay the message to FRIDAY. His brain races with what to do. He knows that (Y/N) wouldn’t mind them being here, but he was hoping to spend some real time alone to figure out where you two are.

He couldn’t begin to imagine how (Y/N) handled the break-up. At the time Tony thought it was the best thing for you both. (Y/N) is about to face a very busy last year of college, her whole life ahead of her and he didn’t want to be a reason to hold her back. Her last year of nursing school will be very tense and busy. She has boards to pass, maintaining her grades, clinicals, and so much more.

Not only that, but Tony was getting scared on how real this relationship was becoming. He has never been so vulnerable with anyone before. (Y/N) makes it easy for him to lose himself in their conversations. Tony just trusts that she won’t judge him, even with every story of his past he never once felt her love for him waiver. That, along with his own feelings, terrifies him. People he cares for tend to get hurt and he can’t bear the thought of anything happen to (Y/N), that anyone could hurt her.

Though hearing the raw pain in (Y/N)’s voice from the call the other night made him realize that he was the one that hurt her. The minute he heard (Y/N) all he wanted was to wipe away her tears and apologize for his behavior. Apologizing has never been one of his strong suits but Tony is willing to work on it for (Y/N). He is willing to do anything for her now in a way he never was able to understand before that night.

”Gotta love caller ID.” Tony hears (Y/N)’s words slur indicating she’s had a few drinks. “I was just calling to let you know I saw you on the talk show. You look really happy-“ Tony zones in on how her voice slightly cracks on the word “happy,” he can feel his own heart breaking slightly before anger toward himself bubbles in his chest.

“I’m outnumbered… wait no, we are odd numbered. Gabby has Carson and Caroline has Joe, and me? I’m making a drunk call to an ex.” Least she knows how drunk she is, Tony thinks. “There is no one here for me to talk too,” a sob erupts in his ear and Tony steadies himself on a nearby table. “No one here that will try to keep me from having too many beers or to keep me from falling on these rocks.”

As if on cue (Y/N) shouts out in pain but Tony knows it is real. He hears a few more silent sobs escape her as if the phone has fallen to the side momentarily. Tony feels a tear of his own trail down his face as urgency to get to (Y/N) overpowers his senses. Immediately he calls for Happy to go pick (Y/N) and her friends up, insisting that he calls as soon as he lays eyes on her.

The moment (Y/N) arrived at his home Tony could see the outward effect of the break-up. Even with (Y/N) passed out from exhaustion and alcohol Tony could see the dark circles underlying her eyes. He took note on how slightly thinner she has gotten and noticed that she slept guarded. Before (Y/N) would be completely relaxed, all limps sprawled every which way, shoulders laying back comfortably, and her facial features open and welcoming. But now her shoulders are hunched in as she curls into a ball on her side. (Y/N)’s eyebrows are knitted together forming cute wrinkles against her forehead, though no matter how adorable they are Tony knows they were because of him.

“Hey the gang wants to go clubbing,” (Y/N) pulls Tony from his thoughts. “Do you want to join us?”

Tony’s face relaxes as a loose smile paints his lips. “I would love that.”

Offering up a kiss to Tony, (Y/N) rushes to a guest room with outfits suitable for tonight. Getting ready as well, Tony thinks of ways to show (Y/N) that he has been paying attention to her over the last year. Remembering all those nights he danced with her in the kitchen comes to mind and her favorite drink – alcohol and non-alcohol – for when she may want one.

Making a list in his head Tony becomes distracted by (Y/N)’s entrance to the living room. Descending down the stairs Tony watches the way the red dress outlines and accents your best physical features. Staring at (Y/N) in awe, he notices the way her cheeks blush at his response. Tony is typically in complete awe with (Y/N) about her brains but most importantly her heart and compassion. He has always believed for (Y/N) to be absolutely beautiful inside and out, but moments like these often take his breath away.

Before Tony could manage to utter a single word Gabby interrupts his focus by announcing that they are all ready to go. Little upset about the interruption, Tony clears his head and wants to give (Y/N)’s friends the benefit of the doubt. He really hopes they all have changed during his time apart from (Y/N) and that they are all only thrown a bit of kilter from the string of events.
