Twenty bucks I can get their number,” Tony spoke in a low voice so that only your little group could hear him. His words were playful, excited at the prospect of the challenge, but you felt anything but happiness at hearing them. It was the final nail in the coffin, as far as you were concerned. You had been so uncertain about his little flirtations here and there, not knowing whether you were imagining the way his eyes lingered on you or the way he always gravitated towards your side, always hopeful that it meant something. But then there were moments like these, where you would witness him joyfully chase some bimbo who had an IQ around the same number as her age.

A shaky smile forced onto your lips, you took a hearty drink from the cocktail Natasha had poured you, desperate to ignore the way your friends were throwing a mixture of sad looks in your direction and looks of utter disbelief at Tony. But he didn’t notice the outrage your friends shared, his attention focused on the short skirt and long legs that followed.

With no one giving him an answer, you knew he’d only get suspicious, so with more gusto than you had ever felt before in your life, you offered a small nod. “Go on then,” you spoke in what was meant to be an encouraging tone, only the billionaire missing the heart aching way your voice cracked.

Finishing his drink and placing it down with a confident ‘thwack’ he carefully put on his most charming smile, a smile you both loved and hated in equal measure, and began to saunter towards the already entranced woman.

A sigh from beside you, and Natasha was wrapping her arm around your waist, pulling you into a one armed hug as the rest of the group shook their heads and muttered about how utterly dense Tony was.

“I’m sorry, Y/N,” Nat spoke in a soft tone, one rarely heard in such a public setting.

“Yeah, I know,” you sighed, pulling that well practiced air of nonchalance into action. “I’m totally going to lose that twenty dollars.”
