It has been a few weeks since that night you were stood-up, since Tony confessed his feelings for you and you were too sleepy to hear. From that night on you noticed that Tony has been walking on eggshells whenever around you. Anytime you ask him if everything was okay, he always brushes it off and heads to the lab for the day.

You lay reading on the couch twirling the quarter in between your fingers. The shiny object hangs off of a long silver chain that feels cool resting against your arm. You’re not actually reading, you haven’t flipped the page in twenty minutes. Instead your focus is trained on Tony and the door to the lab right around the corner.

As if on cue, the door slides open with Tony on the other side. You watch him enter the kitchen over the rim of your book. He hasn’t noticed you there yet. Normally when you are in the living room the tv is on announcing your presence.

“Hey Tony.” You say and he all but jumps out of his skin. “Busy day?”

“In a way.” He avoids eye contact.

Getting off the couch you join him in the kitchen and grab a glass of water. Waiting for the clear liquid to fill the cup you continue to twirl the quarter with your fingers.

“(Y/N)…”

“Yes?” You ask hasty, desperately needing him to talk to you, but he just shrugs. “Come on Tony, tell me.”

“I was just,” his gaze returns to you but seems to be thousands of miles away. “I wanted to ask the story behind that necklace. The one with the quarter.”

A little shocked, you smile as you softly press the smooth circle against the palm of your hand. Taking it off, you hold it out for Tony to grab. His warm hand softly grazes yours while grasping the chain and you feel your cheeks heat up.

“I’ve had it since I was 4, before I met you.” You started, a smile consuming your face. “I had this friend, Sam. He was a bit older than me but we played all the time. If we weren’t eating we were on the monkey bars, or the swings, or the slide.”

Tony’s expression hasn’t changed but you saw something in his eyes before he directed his attention to the coin. You never had anyone ask about the quarter. Most people just thought you were an idiot for defacing a perfectly good piece of money. The truth is, you have tons of them stored in a box under your bed. Any time you find a 2002 Indiana quarter with a race car on it you never spend it.

“One day,” you take a step closer as you continue. “Sam’s dad gave him the quarter and he raced over to show me. We played for a few hours but then he couldn’t find it in his pocket. So for days we searched in the sand at the playground until one day I found it.”

“You found this tiny quarter?” He looks at you in disbelief but you nod.

“He told me to keep it and I have ever since.” You run a finger over the quarter in Tony’s hand. “And now when I come across one I keep it. I’m not sure why exactly, I just can’t let it go.”

Well that’s not quite true. For years your parents and grandparents teased you about how Sam was your first love. You always shrugged it off and said they were funny. You never thought that a 4 year old could fall in love. Well maybe they can, in their own way.

“Do you think that is too young to be in love?” You blurt out your thoughts.

You both look at each other at the same time rising a smile from you both. Though as soon as your eyes met, the faster they look away. You mentally curse yourself for not being more careful with your thoughts.

“Well, (Y/N)…” He looks at you with a softness you haven’t seen since the night he cheered you up. “With you I think anything is possible.”

Tony takes the chains in his hands and places them around your head. The familiar coolness from the metal lays against your skin. A shiver runs down your body but you can’t tell if it’s from the necklace or the fact Tony’s hand is now cupping your cheek. You feel his thumb brush your high cheekbones and you’ve suddenly forgotten how to breathe.

“First loves are a big deal.” He whispers, leaning in closer. “Your last however, your lasts are forever and I intend to be yours… however long it takes.”

You’re body takes over for you as your lips find themselves being propelled closer to his. Surprisingly his lips appear to be soft with a contrast of his stubble from his slight growing beard. Once Tony’s initial shock wears off his arms engulf around you, pulling you closer.

“I’m sorry.” You pull away scared of his reaction to your initiation of the kiss.

“I’m not.” Tony leans his forehead against your before pressing a slight kiss against the soft skin on your nose. You’re not sure how but you believe him about first and last loves, and you know everything will be okay.
