"can you hand me that knife?" alhaitham asked kaveh.
the two roommates were cooking dinner together in the kitchen. they've finally talked to each other again, which made both of them feel at ease—although they wouldn't admit it out loud.
kaveh gave alhaitham the knife he was using to cut onions, "here."
"thanks," alhaitham said as he gave kaveh a slight smile.
the two worked together to make a delicious soup for both of them to enjoy, despite the fact that alhaitham hated soup.
actually, alhaitham was supposed to be the only one cooking that night, but kaveh insisted on helping him while secretly on the mission to just enjoy quality time with him.
"i have a question, alhaitham," kaveh stated out of the blue as he stopped whatever he was doing. "you might not be the right person to be asked this question, though..."
alhaitham stopped his work on cutting some carrots and glanced behind him only to see kaveh fiddling with his hands. "what is it? i'll try to give you an answer no matter what."
"have you ever fallen in love?" kaveh began. "i know you say you don't wish to be in a relationship, but i'm sure you've at least felt some kind of feeling towards someone."
"uh... yes, i have," alhaitham answered truthfully. "what's wrong with that?"
kaveh perked up at his reply, "when did you feel like you've fallen in love? how did it feel like? do you enjoy it?"
"you really like to put yourself in other people's business, huh?" alhaitham sighed as he turned around to face the curious blonde man. "must i really answer the questions? what are you going to do with the information i'm about to give?"
"nothing..." kaveh replied quietly. "i just want to know! after all, we've been roommates and friends for a while, so it's normal for me to ask such things, isn't it? but you don't have to answer, i don't want to make you say things you're uncomfortable with."
kaveh was lying. he wanted to know because he was curious about alhaitham's love life. alhaitham never talked about it, so of course kaveh got curious. he wanted to know if he also had a chance to win his heart, too.
"i'm not sure if what i feel towards this person is love or anything like that, but i guess i've liked someone ever since i graduated from the akademiya," alhaitham replied. "that's all i'm telling you, though. i'm not saying who that person might be, but if you really want to know... they're an amazing and strong person."
there was silence for a few seconds as kaveh processed what his roommate said.
"....you're sober, aren't you, alhaitham?" kaveh raised an eyebrow. "i'm surprised you even gave me an answer."
"i am indeed sober, yes," alhaitham scoffed as he turned around to face the kitchen counter to continue cutting the carrots. "don't even think about it. i replied just so that your mouth would shut up."
kaveh blushed slightly, thank archon's alhaitham didn't see it. "oh... okay."
alhaitham had to resist the urge to not tell kaveh the truth. what was the truth exactly? it was that alhaitham had somewhat feelings for kaveh. yes, the person alhaitham spoke of earlier was him. he wasn't sure himself, but every time he sees kaveh his heart would beat quicker.
every time kaveh crossed his mind, alhaitham would always get lost in his thoughts. kaveh was too pure, too kind, and too perfect to be with someone like him. that's why he never told kaveh his true feelings towards him, even though he'd already felt the feelings for a very long time.
other than afraid kaveh wouldn't feel the same, he was also afraid to hurt him. he knew he had hurt kaveh multiple times, yet kaveh still wants to hang around him. was kaveh afraid to lose him to the point he'd still stick around alhaitham despite the fact that his heart was broken many times already? or perhaps it was just because he needed a place to stay?
just the thought makes alhaitham want to question it right then and there in front of kaveh himself. but he knew better to not let that happen, it'd ruin whatever they have now.
he's fine with just being in a friendship with kaveh. he didn't mind, as long as he gets to take care and watch over him. but the feelings he felt for kaveh was too much, it felt... strange.
was it love? alhaitham wasn't sure if that was what love is like, but if it was then he both enjoyed and hated the feeling, especially if he was feeling love for kaveh.
"ouch!" alhaitham shouted out of the blue, which made kaveh instantly stand beside the man and look at him with concern.
"what's wrong?" kaveh looked at alhaitham's face and saw him grimacing.
alhaitham looked at his finger. he accidentally cut open a bit of his skin while cutting the carrots, but a decent amount of blood came out of it.
kaveh widened his eyes, "oh my archons! hold on, let me get you a band-aid!"
"ow—no need, kaveh..." alhaitham said as he put the knife down and put his finger in front of his face, as kaveh went to find him a band-aid.
kaveh ran back to the kitchen with one in his hand, "here you... oh–"
he stopped in his tracks with wide eyes and his mouth open as he saw alhaitham lick the blood on his finger. he swore that that made alhaitham more attractive. and without him realizing it, his cheeks went slightly red.
alhaitham looked at him, "oh, you've got the band-aid already? let me wash it first."
as soon as alhaitham finished washing his finger, kaveh took his hand and inspected it carefully as he opened the band-aid, getting it ready for alhaitham's finger.
"what were you thinking?!" kaveh shook his head. "you... how does your mind even work, anyway? there's literally a sink over there! did you really have to lick the blood? ugh..."
as kaveh worked on his finger, alhaitham noticed how kaveh's cheeks were slightly red, to which he couldn't help but blush slightly himself. kaveh was too caring. the way he immediately tried to help him, even though it was just a small cut... the small act made alhaitham's heart flutter.
could this feeling be what people call 'love'? alhaitham thought.
"there," kaveh smiled slightly as he touched alhaitham's now band-aided finger and looked up at him. "how did this happen anyway?"
"i... there was a fly that caught me off guard," alhaitham lied.
kaveh laughed slightly, "i see. well, just make sure to be careful next time, okay? i don't want you to get hurt."
as kaveh let go of his finger and continued to make the soup, alhaitham could only stand there, frozen in his spot. the way he said that made alhaitham want to hug him so bad.
"you don't have to continue this soup," kaveh said as he began to cut the remaining carrots with a new and cleaner knife. "i'll do it myself. you sit down, it's okay."
"you sure you can handle this by yourself?" alhaitham asked.
kaveh nodded and pushed alhaitham away, "yes, i'm sure. now, shoo! let me make my soup in peace."
alhaitham chuckled quietly as he got seated in the living room, whilst kaveh went back to the kitchen and continued making the soup.
alhaitham's heart felt warm that whole time. what was it? why did he feel like that? whatever that feeling was, it made alhaitham feel happy. and what was more interesting was that he felt it when he was around kaveh. perhaps it was really love?
he'll have to ask a friend about it. he'll ask for some guidance and tips as well.
