*💚Shaggy's POV💚*

I was sliding. Fast. A dizzying, twisting drop down a slick, dark tunnel that spit me out onto a floor of coarse, damp sand. I coughed, spitting out grit.

"Scoob?" My voice was a hoarse whisper in the immense silence. I stood up, brushing myself off. I was in a cavern—vast, dark, and dripping with menace. Somewhere deep under Spooky Island.

"Scooby Doo, where are you?" I called out louder. My voice echoed back, a ghost of itself. I started forward, my heart a frantic drum solo in my chest.

"Scooby..."

The cave opened into a larger chamber. In the centre, glowing with a sickly green light, was a huge, transparent vat. It was filled with a swirling, ethereal substance, and floating inside were... heads. Dozens of them, eyes closed, drifting peacefully in a nightmare soup.

I gulped. My feet moved me closer against my better judgment. I peered over the edge.

"Shaggy! Shaggy!"

I knew that voice. I whipped around, searching the shadows. Nothing. The voice came again, fainter. Something told me to look back into the vat.

There she was. Velma's bespectacled face, adrift among the others. Her eyes were open.

"Shaggy!" she called, her voice seeming to emanate from the floating head itself.

My only reaction was a dumb, slow wave. "Velma?" I managed, my brain struggling to process a talking, disembodied head.

"I'll save you," I said, more to myself than to her.

I reached into the cool, viscous liquid. It felt like thick jelly. My fingers closed gently around her spectral form.

"Thanks, Shaggy. Boy, am I glad to see you," she said, her voice clearer now? "Now let me go so I can return to my body, and then get out of here before they find you and steal your protoplasm, too."

I nodded, numb. I released her. Her head-shaped essence zipped away like a released balloon, vanishing through a crack in the cavern ceiling.

I stared after her, then back into the vat. Another familiar face bobbed into view.

Fred.

I plunged my hand back in and grabbed him.

"Hey, buddy."

"Shaggy, listen, man. Someone must have spiked my root beer last night. Talk me down, man! Talk me down!" he babbled, his protoplasmic face a mask of panicked confusion.

"Fred, you're a friggin' protoplasmic head!" I informed him; the absurdity of the statement not lost on me.

"I know, but I'm still the best-looking protoplasmic head here," he declared, his vanity intact even in this state. I couldn't help a weak smile. I gave him a gentle slap, sending him sailing after Velma.

I scanned the vat again, my heart clenching. Daphne. Julia. My hand darted in and closed around a head. I pulled it out. A complete stranger stared back at me.

"Thank you so much! You've saved me! Thank you!"

"Sorry, I'm looking for my friends," I mumbled, and gently placed him back into the swirling mass.

Then I saw her. Purple hair, a determined frown even in this state. Daphne. I snatched her from the soup.

"Put me back, Shaggy. I'll figure a way out myself," she insisted, stubborn to her core.

"Like how?"

"I don't know. I'll use my tongue as an oar and swim to the edge."

I shook my head. "Sorry." I wasn't leaving anyone. I gave her a flick, sending her on her way.

But no Julia. I searched frantically, my hands sifting through the strange, cool protoplasm's. No strawberry-blonde hair. No fierce green eyes.

"Julia! Julia!"

A cold dread, sharper than any monster's claw, seized me. What had they done to her? If she wasn't here...

"Shaggy!"

The voice was real, solid, and it didn't come from the vat. It came from underneath it. I dropped to my knees, peering into a lower, darker alcove beneath the vat's platform.

There she was. Tied to a rickety chair, her hair a mess, but her eyes blazing with life.

"Julia! Thank god you're okay!" The relief that flooded me was so intense it made my knees weak. I scrambled down to her, my fingers fumbling with the tight knots.

"I'm glad you found me," she said, her voice tired but strong.

The last rope fell away. She stood, rubbing her wrists. For a moment, she just stared at me, those incredible green eyes seeing right into me. Then, before I could blink, she grabbed the front of my shirt, pulled me in, and kissed me.

It wasn't a gentle kiss. It was desperate, grateful, real. And I kissed her back without a moment's hesitation, my hands coming up to cradle her face. It was everything—the two years of missing her, the terror of the night, the joy of finding her safe—all poured into a single, perfect moment.

She pulled away, a soft, dazed smile on her lips. "Let's get out of here," she whispered.

"But..." I was breathless, speechless, my world utterly redefined.

As we turned to go, her eyes caught something on a nearby rock. The Daemon Ritus. She snatched it up, tucking it under her arm.

We started moving, picking our way through the cavern. My mind was a whirlwind—monsters, protoplasm's, secret caves—but one thought burned brighter than all the rest, a warmth cutting through the subterranean chill: the lingering, sweet pressure of her lips on mine. I was, without a doubt, on cloud nine.
