" appa! i'm home. " nine year-old nam hae-yi yelled into her apartment, through the closed door. she adjusted one of her bag straps before reaching her hand up to bang on the door. " open the door! i'm cold. " she whined, her shoulders slumping as she walked backwards and stared at the door, as though she was trying to open it with her mind. after waiting for what felt like hours , she sat down against the door and sighed dramatically.

" hello. " she heard a voice to the left of her.

" hi. " hae-yi answered, putting a hand up to block the sun as she stared at the stranger talking to her. it was a boy who seemed to be around her age standing and staring at her. suddenly, he stuck out a hand.

" i'm cheong-san, lee cheong-san. " he quickly took his hand back and wiped it on his trousers before sticking it out again.

" i'm nam hae-yi. " she replied, shaking his hand before moving her head and looking at the floor. she heard the boy sit next to her on the floor.

" why are you sitting on the ground? are you waiting for somebody? " he asked.

" yes i am. my appa isn't home and i'm waiting for him. my door is locked and i can't go inside. " she explained, sighing dramatically once again.

he stood up before asking if she wanted to go into his house and play video games with him while she waited for his dad, explaining that he lived next door to her. obviously, she agreed and entered his home.

" hae-yi! "

" that's my appa! i should go now, thank you for letting me stay for a bit ma'am and cheong-san! " hae-yi grinned and walked towards the door, cheong-san's mom coming along too.

she saw a look of relief on her father's face as they opened the door. she ran into his arms and he kissed her forehead. " where have you been appa! i almost died of freezing coldness waiting for you until cheong-san let me wait inside his house. "

" i'm sorry hae-yi, i got stuck at work. thank you so much for letting my daughter stay ma'am. are you our new neighbours? " her father asked, extremely grateful. cheong-san's mother nodded and they exchanged introductions as hae-yi waved at cheong-san before skipping back into her apartment.

" nam hae-yi doesn't have a mother! " teased a boy in her class as they sat in the corner of the playground.

" shut up! you're being mean. " she answered, crossing her arms angrily. " so what if i don't have a mother? i'm just fine without one! "

" what's going on hae-yi? " cheong-san ran over to her defence from the other side of the playground.

" they're being mean. " she told him as he
' guarded ' her. the boys who were teasing her quickly ran away after seeing cheong-san, who was the tallest boy in school at the time , come over.

" are you okay? " he asked her once they were gone.

" i'm okay, thank you cheong-san. " she grinned up at him, before wrapping her arms around him in a tight hug.

hae-yi slowly walked into her classroom yawning after only getting a few hours of sleep.

" hae-yi ! " i-sak exclaimed, getting up and running over to give her best friend a hug.

" woah. hi i-sak. " she giggled, hugging the girl back before going to sit at her desk.

" ugh we haven't seen each other in so long.. " i-sak complained.

" we literally just saw each other on saturday. dramatic much! " hae-yi answered, playfully slapped her best friend on the arm as she chuckled.

her laughs stopped however when
cheong-san entered the classroom. they made eye contact for a split second before she looked away and rolled her eyes.

" hey gyeong-su! " he smiled, walking over to his friends. as an act of defiance, hae-yi secretly kicked his bag away from his desk when he wasn't looking. it was easy for her to do so as their desks were next to each other.

she giggled , proud of herself before turning back to i-sak and discussing what they should do after school.

" oh my god! we should get tteokbokki! i've been craving it for we-" hae-yi began but was interrupted by cheong-san.

" hey! did you kick my bag? " he accused, holding his bag in one hand and pointing at her in the other as he walked towards her desk. she smirked mischievously and shook her head, claiming it wasn't her. he pulled his hand back, threatening to hit her . however, they both knew well that he would never hurt her. she just laughed and watched him as
su-hyeok put a hand on his shoulder and moved cheong-san away.

" what the fuck is wrong with you? "
cheong-san muttered as he turned around to sit back at his desk.

hae-yi stood up angrily. " what did you just say? " she asked him, as he spun back around to look her in the eye.

" nothing. " he rolled his eyes at her.

" no, you definitely said something. what was it? tell me dickhead. " she smiled sarcastically at him.

" what the fuck did you just call me? " he said.

" nothing. " she taunted, copying what he had said before.

she watched as he tried to suppress his anger and turn around, but just to provoke him she muttered ' fucking prick. ' under her breath.

this was the last straw.

cheong-san quickly spun around, and raised his hand. a teasing smile grew on hae-yi's lips, but it was wiped away when his fist met her nose.
