" bye appa! i'll see you after school! " hae-yi called into her apartment , hearing her father yell goodbye incoherently whilst brushing his teeth.she giggled and stepped outside, locking the door behind her before she headed off to school. as she walked towards the elevator, she put her bag on her shoulder, but it slumped off once she noticed who was standing inside the elevator already.
she let out a frustrated grunt before spinning around and heading towards the stairs.
" wait! " cheong-san called after her, and
hae-yi slowly turned around, adjusting her bag on her shoulder as she watched him run up to her." i'll take the stairs. you can go in the elevator. " he told her.
" i'm fine, i'll walk downstairs. " she replied, looking up at him.
" well i'm taking the stairs... " he said, walking away from her to go down the stairs before turning back to face her, " you can walk on the stairs with me if you want? you won't die from being in the same place as me, you know. "
" whatever. " she rolled her eyes before stomping over to the elevator, " why does he have to be so annoying? "

hae-yi sat with i-sak in the cafeteria as they ate their lunch peacefully, chatting about their plans for the weekend. hae-yi looked around the room as she spoke, until her eyes landed on the table to the right of her. she spotted cheong-san, gyeong-su, su-hyeok and a few other boys from their homeroom sitting there, and she got an idea.
" we should go try on all the makeup samples and then we can- " i-sak was saying, when hae-yi suddenly stood up and marched over to the table on the right of them, " what are you doing? "
in response to her, hae-yi looked over to her best friend and smirked evilly before starting to talk to the boys.
" do you guys want to sit with me and i-sak ? " she asked gyeong-su and su-hyeok, avoiding eye contact with cheong-san as she smiled at them. the boys looked over at cheong-san, who simply bit the inside of his cheek and pretended not to notice hae-yi talking to his friends.
" sure. " su-hyeok answered, picking up his tray and walking over ; gyeong-su did the same after shooting a look to cheong-san.
hae-yi quite liked su-hyeok. he was nice and always smiled at her when they caught eye contact, even though he was friends with her rival. she first talked to him when she was a victim of bullying from myung-hwan and
gwi-nam at the start of high school and he stopped the bullies and helped her to tell a teacher about it.as for gyeong-su, hae-yi would consider him one of her friends. he was funny and she remember the time she broke her arm when she was 15 and he told her jokes to distract her until the ambulance arrived.
cheong-san watched his friends sit with his nemesis. how could they just abandon him to go sit with her? she wasn't even that funny, but they were laughing like crazy. as he stared at their table, hae-yi caught eye contact with him and sent him a sarcastic smile. she knew what she was doing, she had invited his friends to sit with her just to piss him off. and it had worked.

hae-yi was tucking in some chairs into their desks after school when cheong-san walked over to her, looking annoyed.
" you're so annoying, you know that right? " he told her as she laughed slightly.
" why? what did i ever do to you? " she said innocently, continuing to tidy the classroom as he followed her.
" you're just a bitch. "
those words made hae-yi stop what she was doing and look up at him bitterly.
" says you. " she answered, attempting to not show her anger.
" what? " cheong-san asked, confused.
" you're the one who left me back then. you're the reason we aren't friends any more. remember that. " she snapped.
hae-yi's words hit him like a ton of bricks, but deep down cheong-san knew he deserved it.
" it's not my fault we grew apart, i can't help that i just made new friends and moved on. " cheong-san said.
...
" nam hae-yi? we aren't really friends. we're just neighbours and she always hangs around me, that's all. " cheong-san told park
chae-won, a girl from their middle school class who was always rude to hae-yi." so you're really not friends with her? " she asked, hiding her smirk.
" nope. she just sort of follows me around when i never want her to. " cheong-san explained, lying blatantly. hae-yi was his all time best friend, but he wanted to impress his crush, chae-won.
" did you hear that hae-yi? " chae-won asked, looking at somebody who stood behind cheong-san, who furrowed his eyebrows out of confusion.
he slowly turned around and was met with nam hae-yi, who had teary eyes and her mouth open slightly from shock. cheong-san's eyes widened and he took a step towards hae-yi, about to apologise for what he had just said, but the girl simply ran off crying before he had a chance to explain and say sorry.
...
from then on, hae-yi ignored cheong-san. no matter how hard he tried to talk to her and explain, she would simply pretend he didn't exist and begin talking to her other classmates. she even went so far as to ask all her teachers to never put her in a group with cheong-san when they did group projects in class.
when he would knock on her apartment and ask if they could talk, he would hear hae-yi tell her father to ' tell cheong-san to go away' . after months of trying to talk to her, cheong-san finally decided to give up and try to move on.
he stopped waving at her, he stopped calling her, he stopped knocking on her door. he just left her alone. however, he never reciprocated the anger and resentment that she had for him. it was only during high school, when she made new friends and began insulting him at every possible moment, that cheong-san started to dislike her.
but he never hated her.
